Director Shaad Ali is back with OK Jaanu, a remake of Mani Ratnam's Tamil hit OK Kanmani. His last directorial outing, Kill Dil, was an unmitigated debacle. OK Jaanu marks the return of Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur as the lead pair after three years (Aashiqui 2), and their chemistry is one of the main draws of the film.

OK JAANU is a love story about a young couple's live-in relationship and the ups and downs that they face in their respective lives. The film starts off with the 'alighting' of Aditya Gunjal aka Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur) and the 'suicidal threat' of Tara Agnihotri (Shraddha Kapoor). As luck would have it, these two rank strangers (Adi and Tara) bump into each other at a common friend's wedding and hit off from there. Right from the word go, both, Adi and Tara are extremely clear about what they want from their respective lives.

Mani Ratnam delivered a commercially and critically successful film with O Kandhal Kanmani in 2015. With Ok Jaanu, which hits the theatres on Friday, Shaad Ali remakes the movie - borrowing Ratnam's screenplay but treating it to the silky, royal touch of Gulzar's dialogues. So, we have been hearing about the tale of young love that Ok Jaanu is all about. However, allow us to forewarn you, it's something more than that. Let's just say Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur form the supporting cast, while Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson play strong lead roles.

OK Jaanu is the story of non committal Tara and Adi who want to focus on their careers. Adi is a game developer whose only aim is to make it big and go to the US. Adi accidentally meets Tara first at the railway station and then at a friend's wedding. The two instantly hit it off and even exchange numbers. During the course of their interaction Tara reveals to Adi about her plans of pursuing architecture in Paris. Adi and Tara at the beginning decide that marriage isn't meant for him and opt for a live-in relationship instead.

Replace Adi with Aidan, Aman, Anthony, Ahmad, Rustom, Gurvinder, Armaan or any of lakhs of available male names, and what you have is a question women have been asked for decades. What do you want more? Love or career? Marriage and children or that job? Because it has been decreed by those who know what is best for us better than we do, that wombs are incapacitated by ambition, and maternal instincts - a.k.a. every female human's bounden duty - drown in professional success. As is often the case in life, so too in Ok Jaanu, the question is asked by a well-meaning person.

Romance prompts labels and rules. There's always a 'type' to describe both the individuals in a couple, the arrangement they agree upon and the guidelines they hope to set and follow for the sake of perfection or peace. But the heart is no slave to system and gives precedence to impulse above anything else.

A breezy, feel-good romance with its share of highs, OK Jaanu floats along through some interesting thematic territory without managing to soar to the altitude one expects it to. This is a slightly modified remake of Mani Ratnam's Tamil smash hit OK Kanmani, enlivened by a charming and lively pair of leads and lent a degree of gravitas by the supporting duo of Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson.

Throughout the movie, Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Tara (Shraddha Kapoor) seem to be running after trains or buses in motion, barely getting in before it's too late - a great metaphor for the love lives of people of today's generation. Adi is a video game developer with the American dream; Tara is an architect, destined for Paris. But they lock eyes at a wedding and all their plans go out of the window. They flirt, take a trip together, move in and decide to date for as long as they're both in Mumbai.

The official remake of Mani Ratnam's Ok Kanmani tries for everything that a winsome romance should have: good-looking young couple, perky dialogues, song-and-dance, picturesque locations. Ratnam's pass at young love in Mumbai was a hit, but wasn't a great film, even though Dulquer Salman and Nithya Menen played really well together. Shaad Ali's copy Ok Jaanu, with a screenplay by Ratnam, is faithful but pale and predictable, and doesn't lift off the screen.

Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur), a video game developer saves a complete stranger Tara (Shraddha Kapoor), an architect, who was about to jump in front of a local train in Mumbai after fighting with her boyfriend. Just few days later, the two meet again in a church at Adi's close buddy Jenny's wedding and they hit it off instantly. In no time, they become more than just friends, in their words, Jaanu.
