Sandra Bullock, John Malkovich, and Sarah Paulson starred in the smash horror hit ‘Bird Box’ (2018) on Netflix. The film was so popular that the streaming service decided to create a sequel in July 2023. Known as ‘Bird Box Barcelona’.
The premise of the first ‘Bird Box’ movie was that strange animals appear out of nowhere. When humans spot them, they have the power to modify their brains and cause them to commit suicide. However, some people are also transformed by the monsters into "seers," and these people don't attempt suicide.
Barcelona is the home of ‘Bird Box Barcelona’. The narrative centers on Sebastian (Mario Casas), a father who longs to reconnect with Anna (Alejandra Howard). He will do anything for that, including aiding the odd aliens in eliminating the human survivors.
In order to keep Anna safe and her eyes closed, Sebastian manages to infiltrate a group of human survivors and does his best to convince them to view the monsters as angels. Sofia (Naila Schuberth), a German girl with no other language skills, becomes friends with Sebastian. Sebastian translates the girl's statements because he speaks German, letting the group know that the military was using Barcelona's Montiuc fortress as cover.
The army has kept the beasts out of the castle since it is on top of a hill and is well-guarded. The survivors are trying to get to Montjuic while navigating additional monsters and seers. The survivors perish as a result of Sebastian's agenda-driven sabotage of their equipment.
As ‘Bird Box Barcelona’ comes to a close, Sebastian is joined by Sofia and Chloe (Georgina Campbell), an English woman who is responsible for taking care of her. He makes the moral choice to defend Sofia from other seers.
Sebastian learns that the animals can mimic human speech and appearance in order to pass for a loved one. Sebastian believes that the creatures are pulling a fast one with Anna's specter.
A creature is finally contained, but this merely implies that there might be another ‘Bird Box’ film where this creature escapes and creates mayhem.
