On Independence Day 2023, Akshay Kumar took to social media to reveal that he has relinquished his Canadian citizenship and is now an Indian citizen. The actor, who has faced scrutiny for holding Canadian citizenship, shared this significant decision with his fans.

Akshay Kumar, acclaimed for his roles in movies like ‘Hera Pheri’, ‘Namastey London’, ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’, and ‘Padman’, encountered a challenging phase in the 1990s when he encountered a series of over 15 film failures. This tough period prompted him to seek Canadian citizenship, a move he later explained was influenced by the underwhelming performance of his films at the box office.

Akshay Kumar took to social media to announce his recent acquisition of Indian citizenship and wrote "Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind (sic)!"

Amidst repeated inquiries about his Canadian citizenship, Akshay Kumar previously clarified that he consistently fulfills his tax obligations in India, despite his foreign citizenship.

In 2019, the actor of ‘OMG 2’ issued a statement addressing the persistent interest and negativity surrounding his foreign citizenship, expressing his confusion over the undue attention. “I really don't understand the unwarranted interest and negativity about my citizenship. I have never hidden or denied that I hold a Canadian passport. It is also equally true that I have not visited Canada in the last seven years. I work in India and pay all my taxes in India,” he had shared on social media a few years back.
