Recently, Naseeruddin Shah penned an open letter addressing their inter-religion marriage, expressing his dissatisfaction with the current political climate that has cast unwarranted doubts on their relationship. The letter, published in the National Herald, delved into their deep connection and Naseeruddin's disappointment in facing scrutiny after so many years together.

He recounted a situation where he was indirectly accused of "love jihad," reflecting on how such accusations emerged decades after his marriage. Naseeruddin Shah also shared a touching anecdote about his mother's acceptance of Ratna Pathak Shah's decision not to convert to Islam.

This decision was supported with the poignant sentiment, "Haan, mazhab kaise badla jaa sakta hai" (Yes, how can faith be changed). He juxtaposed this sentiment with the divisive rhetoric that "Hindus and Muslims cannot live together," highlighting the contrasting narratives that exist.

Underscoring their own relationship as proof of Hindu-Muslim harmony, Naseeruddin Shah emphasized that their union stands as evidence that coexistence is not only possible but also desirable. He questioned the origins of such poisonous ideas and whether they have roots tracing back to the Partition.

Naseeruddin Shah revealed that Ratna Pathak Shah's family initially had reservations about their union, not due to faith differences, but because of perceptions about his temperament. However, an elder family member assured him that religious and political disparities wouldn't be problematic, but rather societal issues like the celebration of Diwali versus Eid and decisions about their children's religious upbringing.
