With Lily Collins' Emily in Paris Season 3 and Daniel Craig's Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery capping out its year-end releases, Netflix is getting ready to say goodbye to 2022, which saw the streamer release a number of rom coms, historical dramas, mystery thrillers, and action adventures.
In fact, Netflix produced six of the top ten most popular shows of the year, earning the streaming service more positions in the Nielsen Top 10 list than all other providers combined. Five of the top 10 English-language Netflix programmes of all time had their premieres in 2022: Wednesday, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Bridgerton S2, and Inventing Anna.
The Adam Project, The Gray Man, and Purple Hearts are three of the 10 most watched English-language movies on Netflix ever. The Tinder Swindler later became the most popular Netflix documentary film ever, while The Sea Beast, which also debuted in 2022, became the streaming giant's most popular animated children's movie.
On Netflix, non-English material has also attracted a sizable viewership. The top 10 non-English film lists on the streaming service include seven movies from this year. These movies include Troll (Norway), Loving Adults (Denmark), Through My Window (Spain), The Takedown (France), All Quiet on the Western Front (Germany), and My Name is Vendetta (Italy).
This year on Netflix, recurrent shows also attracted viewers in addition to the new episodes and movies. Successful television series include The Crown S5, Stranger Things 4, Elite S6, Bridgerton S2, The Umbrella Academy S3, Young Royals S2, and Ozark S4. Even much awaited sequels, such as Enola Holmes 2, Lost Bullet 2, and 365 Days sequels, enthralled the audience, occasionally drawing in more viewers than the prior season.
An increasing number of Netflix users are catching the K-bug. This year, about 60% of Netflix users viewed a Korean film. In Korea, six of the top ten K-dramas were available on Netflix. These include Our Blues, Narco Saints, All of Us Are Dead, Twenty Five Twenty One, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and Narco Saints.
The Netflix effect helped a lot of classic songs from the past top the charts in 2022. One of the most popular songs on TikTok this year was Running Up That Hill, which was included in Stranger Things Season 4. Goo Goo Muck by The Cramps and Bloody Mary by Lady Gaga are two hit songs that came from the smash horror comedy Wednesday. On TikTok, the hashtag #WednesdayAddams has been used more than 19 billion times, and Lady Gaga contributed to the craze.
