The Netflix mystery-thriller series 1899, created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar who also created Dark, won't have a second season. Bo Odar and Friese, who serve as co-showrunners and executive producers, posted the news on social media on Monday. Since the announcement, fans have made sure that the show's name has been trending everywhere.

THE CREATORS’ INSTAGRAM STORY

The authors wrote in a joint statement that was published on Odar's Instagram page, “With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. That’s life.”

The pair also thanked fans for their love and support. The duo gained international notoriety as a result of the success of the popular German television series Dark.

They stated: “We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.”

1899, advertised as a bilingual German period drama that followed a heterogeneous group of European refugees on a terrifying journey to the US, was written by Friese and directed by Bo Odar.

The series' tagline was, “When they discover another migrant ship adrift on the open sea, their journey takes an unexpected turn. What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare.” Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, and Miguel Bernardeau appeared in the eight-episode programme.
