Starring Ram Charan, Jr NTR, Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt in prominent roles, RRR was one of the most-awaited films of 2022. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker SS Rajamouli, the big-ticket period drama was scheduled to arrive in theatres on January 7, 2022. On January 1, however, the makers released a statement and announced that they have decided to hold the release of the film in the wake of the sudden spike in COVID-19 cases in the country.

After facing several setbacks over the past two years, RRR was finally ready to release in cinemas. Everyone associated with the film was quite gung-ho about the project and pulled out all the stops for its release.

Ram Charan, Jr NTR, SS Rajamouli, Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt left no stone unturned in promoting the film on various platforms. Sources claim that the postponement of RRR at the last moment has incurred a heavy loss of approximately ₹18-20 crores that were spent on the promotions of the film.

Insiders tell a publication that Rajamouli was “super-adamant” about releasing the film on January 7 at any cost. “And he had the backing of everyone who counted in the project, from the producers to the actors. But when the situation got worse, Rajamouli had to back down,” divulges a source.

The source further reveals that out of 18-20 crores, approximately 2-3 crores were spent on transporting fans of Ram Charan and NTR Jr to promotional events outside Andhra. “Rajamouli is aware that his two leading men in RRR have a minimal fan following outside Andhra. For the media, marketing events in Mumbai and other cities outside, Andhra fans were flown and put up in luxury hotels. All they had to do was applaud, cheer and whistle for their demi-gods in exchange for hospitality,” adds the source.
