Jayeshbhai Jordaar Review: It does accomplish its mission of telling a weighty story laced with bittersweet humour

Ranveer Singh, who was last seen in Kabir Khan’s sports drama 83 (2021) as Kapil Dev, features in an amusing avatar in his latest film Jayeshbhai Jordaar. Just like multiple other films, this social comedy-drama from the house of Yash Raj Films also enters cinemas after facing a series of delays due to the pandemic. The film revolves around the topic of saving the girl child. Let’s find out if Jayeshbhai Jordaar has the potential to be your weekend pick.

STORY: Jayesh (Ranveer Singh) is an obedient son to his father (Boman Irani), who is the head of the village. He is married to Mudra Patel (Shalini Pandey) and the couple has a girl aged 9. However, his parents keep badgering him, and their daughter-in-law for a male heir to take the family forward. After 5 miscarriages, when Mudra gets pregnant and it is revealed that she is going to deliver a baby girl yet again, Jayesh sheds his timid avatar to save his unborn child from his parents and the so-called samaj (society).

HIGHS: Ranveer Singh is known for slipping into the skin of every character that he portrays and he does the same in Jayeshbhai Jordaar as well. Singh plays the small-town Gujarati boy to perfection and wins our hearts with his antics and quirks. You just cannot imagine any other actor as Jayesh. Shalini Pandey, who makes her debut in Bollywood after starring in a couple of South Indian films including Arjun Reddy (2017), looks perfect in her part.

Seasoned actors Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah are brilliant as Singh’s parents. Irani’s baritone voice adds more authenticity to his character. Shah is impeccable in every scene that she appears in.

Apart from performances what truly stands out is the local set-up and perfect detailing of the film. Jayeshbhai Jordaar is set in a small town of Gujarat. But the story of the film is such that it could have been set in any state.

LOWS: Jayeshbhai Jordaar picks up an important issue, but average writing fails to exploit its full potential. It is good that the film uses humour to ensure it does not look preachy but in the absence of a tight screenplay is where it lacks the most.

FINAL VERDICT:

Jayeshbhai Jordaar has the perfect blend of entertainment and social messaging and is powered by captivating performances from each and every cast member. Having said that, some better work in the writing department could have been more rewarding. I am going with 3 stars.
