What The Fish Review

Rating: 3/5

One Line Review: A one time watch entertaining flick with a huge entertainment and comedy quotient.

Positive Points: New age cinematography, Impressive direction, Ideal plot for a good entertainer, Impressive character performances.

Negative Points: Average music, One time watch entertainer.

Plot: Sudha Mishra (Dimple Kapadia) is a conservative, petulant and irritable old lady staying alone in her Delhi bungalow. Her son who stays in Papua New Guinea is an accomplished chef. The lady is particular about her pet fish, a yellow colored parrot fish named Mishti and her money plant which she stole from one of her friends. She decides to leave her home in the care of her model niece (Sheeba Shabnam) and her boyfriend Sumit (Sumit Suri). Now Sumit is a kind of person who would take hundred responsibilities at a time, but won't fulfill even one of them properly. Sudha 'aunty' gives a plethora of instructions to the duo, especially regarding the fish and the money plant and leaves.

The same night, Sumit organizes a party of friends, where one of his college friends Neerav (Anand Tiwari) comes with his girlfriend and begs him to hide her as she has eloped from Saharanpur. However, this simply doesn't end here. They delegate the responsibility of their housekeeping to someone else and this creates a chain of housekeepers involving a womanizer friend Ravi (Manu Rishi Chadha), a boxer (Vishal Sharma), his sister Minal (Geetika Tyagi) and many other characters in the cocktail of confusion and comedy.

The chaos that takes place in the home, results in replacement of Auntyji's beloved pet fish and money plant many times. Each time this happens, it is the young and jolly aquarium owner's son Pummy (Manjot Singh) who comes into the picture.

Direction And Other Technical Aspects: The direction is certainly impressive with the scenes fitted perfectly in the film's background. In this particular aspect, the film begins with the end and rest of it, is just a flashback, explaining the reason for what you have seen initially. The timing of the introduction of the characters fits neatly into the overall plot. Also, the way the film shuffles between the time when Auntyji returns and when she was absent is just perfect, creating a hilarious mishmash of events. Cinematography is also impressive with the film using angles and sometimes a real time picture quality, a characteristic of recent year's cinematography technique.

Performances: With no further doubt, the film's character performances are very natural. From the uber modern Delhi youth to a traditional and short tempered old woman Dimple Kapadia, from a village girl to a bunch of Haryanvi goons, everyone succeeds in playing their part in the right way.

Music: The music is quite average with the songs not much groovy. One may find the party track tune, "Suraj Ast Te Baabe Mast" quite catchy.

Final verdict: The film is certainly a wholesome entertainer with loads of fun and confusion to keep you engaged. The characters are well suited to the plot and the scenes are like pieces of jigsaw puzzle which are placed innovatively in the film's backdrop. The film also throws in some really funny surprises which are going to make you laugh. Though the film is good, it is a one time watch bone tickler.
