One line Review: With pragmatic sequences, realistic dialogues and sensible plot, Shoojit Sircar's 'Piku' truly is a quirky, real and a heart touching joy ride.
Positive Points: The slice of life story is very well constructed and narrated. Hats off! to the director and the creative team for keeping everything so real and involving throughout the movie. The feel, the after taste, the warmth the movie renders on you is truly magical. The character-sketch of all the actors is very well established which helps one in getting more involved in the film. The relatable subject, impeccable performances by the actors, is what makes Piku a special film. Movies like these substantiate that Indian Cinema is evolving in the right direction.
Negative Points: There was not much to complain about in the film. Except minor flaws that can be easily overlooked though to be precise Mr. Bachchan's paunch or the balloon like tummy looked fake at times.
Plot: The movie maintained its authenticity since its inception. Piku (Deepika Padukone) is an independent, intelligent, short tempered woman with liberated thoughts. She lives in Delhi with her widowed father, Bhaskor Banergee who is in his early 70s. Bhaskor da (Amitabh Bachchan) is an old grumpy man who is troubled by the problem of constipation. Irritated by the difficult bowel issues, Bhaskor da is always discussing, conversing, examining it not only with Piku but with every single one he meets. It depicts how old age can be troublesome not only for oneself but also for others around you. Midst the family chaos, there is Rana Chaudhari (Irrfan Khan) who is the owner of Himachal Cab Company. His company provides cab service to banergee family.
The plot executes how Piku manages the home and office while taking complete responsibility of her cantankerous yet adorable father. Their life story moves forward as they live their sweet and salty moments unless one day when Bhaskor da collapses due to over drinking at a relative's party. It is when the old stubborn father decides to visit to his childhood place Calcutta and yes, by road! As no driver is ready to drive the annoying father-daughter Jodi to another city, Rana decides to take the charge. It is the time when Rana and Piku get to know each other quite well in the course of the long journey. The story takes a crispy twist when the fun road trip begins. This quirky tale which is so inclined to motion is an emotional journey depicting the real and everyday facts of a father-daughter duo.
Direction and other Technical Aspects: The unpredictable plot which surprises you at every other frame is an appreciable effort. The background score and the camera work is exceptional. The execution of the script by the director is just right. Juhi Chaturvedi's writing is something which makes this film magical. The dialogues again are sure to give you lovable doses of laughter every now and then.
Performances: All the actors made the story believable. Deepika is maturing as an actor with every movie she does. She is exceptional, effortless as Piku. The beautiful young lady is no girl with magical powers but a realistic multi-tasker who learns to manage her life and situations herself. The dimpled, dusky beauty steals your heart by her flawless presentation in every single frame.
Amitabh Bachchan is a legend and no amount of appreciation will be enough to describe his worth. He becomes the character he plays. You can truly feel the royal pain he renders on Piku by his irritating acts.
Irrfan's character is like a breath of fresh air in the mostly chaotic life of Piku and her father. Needless to say, he is an endowed actor and charms by his astounding performance in every frame. With his realistic charisma, he takes the story to a new dimension.
Music: All the songs are subtle and complement the visuals aptly. The tracks are special and are very well composed, precisely adding brownie points to the film.
Final Verdict: 'Piku' is quirky, 'Piku' is fun and 'Piku' is surely a must watch!!
