Mary Kom Review

Rating: 2.5/5

One-line Review: Over the top dramatization, loses the biopic charm of 'Mary Kom'

Positive Points: Priyanka Chopra's performance and her boxer's physique

Negative Points: Over dramatic scenes, stretched picturisation, Priyanka's weak Manipuri accent

Plot: A little girl from Manipur's Kangathei village kindles the dream of being a boxer someday. She grows up being a hulk woman Mary Kom (Priyanka Chopra) whose father is against her boxing as she might spoil her face. But "ziddi" Mary goes against his will and chooses boxing over everything else. Her dream gets wings when she starts wining one title after the other under the guidance of her mentor Narjit Singh (Sunil Thapa).

A turning point occurs when Mary's longtime friend Onler Kom (Darshan Kumaar) proposes her for marriage and she agrees. Its then her coach Narjit who stood beside her while fighting all the odds, disowns her as he believes she will spoil her glorified career after getting married and this is what exactly happens. World boxing champion Mary enters into the motherhood and becomes a forgotten hero.

Just when Mary is about to abandon her career, Onler encourages her to go back to the boxing ring. He takes the whole responsibility of their children and sets her free to follow her passion. But this time things are not easy for Mary as she has lost the grip over the game and also motherhood has consumed her mind.

Direction and Other Technical Aspects: Debutant director Omung Kumar managed to bring out great performances from the lead actors, but he failed to pump soul in the legendary tale of World champion Mary Kom. Scriptwriter Saiwyn Quadras had the potential of writing out of the track story on such inspiring protagonist, which he didn't fulfill.

Cinematography by Keiko Nakahara is average. Rajesh Pandey has edited the film well; still some scenes are stretched to the limit.

Performances: Priyanka Chopra has proved herself the right choice to project the living legend Mary Kom on celluloid. Right from the stubborn boxer to the warm-hearted mother, she got into each and every layer of her character. Plus, her hard work to build that boxer's body gains her the ovation. Her training session filmed in song "Salaam India" introduces determined Priyanka, who is as stubborn as world champion Mary Kom.

Sunil Thapa has given his spectacular performance as Mary's coach Narjit Singh. His motivating words hit like arrows on the ears of audience. Darshan Kumaar did justice to his supportive husband's character Onler.

Music: Shashi - Shivamm has tuned the music of film 'Mary Kom'. "Ziddi Dil" sung by Vishal Dadlani is the introductory song of stubborn Mary. While songs "Adhure", "Teri Baari", "Saudebaazi" and "Salaam India" are filmed on Mary's journey. "Chaoro" is the lullaby sung by the leading lady Priyanka. While, the ruling song of the entire album is a romantic track "Sukoon Mila" sung by Arijit Singh.

Final Verdict: We do understand 'Mary Kom' is a commercial film, but over the top dramatic scenes have lost its scope of getting called the biopic of legendary World boxing champion Mary Kom. Her real life interviews are so inspiring; that the film doesn't make a mark in front of it. Overall, it's an average film which earns 2.5 stars rating.
