Rating: 3.5/5
One Line Review: An efficacious tale of a stylized superhero, where he changes the game and sets the ball rolling with his creme-de-la-creme stunts.
Positive Points: Towering performance by Hrithik Roshan, Dexterous direction, Kaleidoscopic visual effects, Out of the blue performances by Kangana Ranaut and Vivek Oberoi, Excellent art direction, Inspiring social message.
Negative Points: Mind-numbing music.
Plot: The curtain lifts up and a mighty voice tone starts narrating the story from the past. After saving father's life from the villainous Dr. Siddhant Arya (Naseeruddin Shah), Krishna Mehra (Hrithik Roshan) leads a joyous life with his father Rohit Mehra (Hrithik Roshan in double role) and loving wife Priya (Priyanka Chopra). Now, Rohit Mehra's new experiment comprises bringing the life back into a dead body with the help of solar energy. On the other hand, Krishna hides his superpowers from the world, but secretly goes on saving hundreds of lives. He lives a common man's life, in which he is unable to settle properly in any job, due to his superheroic helping nature. Priya works as a reporter with Aaj Tak news channel. And this time, the couple is soon going to be proud parents.
On the other side of the world, there exists an evil power called Kaal (Vivek Oberoi), whose ultimate aim is to destroy the world and be the supreme power by earning millions. Although Kaal's brain runs much faster than the time, but his body portion under his head does not move, he can only move two fingers and thus, he is wheelchair-bound. To accomplish his evil goal, Kaal develops a gang of mutants, who are concoction of human and animals and hence, they are called as 'Maanvars'. As per his business plan, Kaal invents a poisonous virus, which contains potential to wipe off the lives of the entire city within fraction of seconds and spread the panic. They also develop its antidote as medicine. The team of Kaal spreads this virus to various portions of the globe like Namibia and eventually, Kaal zeroes upon his target as Mumbai. Eventually, the lethal virus starts taking several lives in Mumbai and Krishna along with his father Rohit, gets tremendously disturbed to see the catastrophic situation. Both of them come to know that being empowered with superpowers, the virus cannot affect them in any way. So, Rohit Mehra makes antidote with his blood and the father-son begin to save the city from the virus. Kaal comes to know about it and his world gets shaken up, as he believes no antidote can be developed without his blood. And the power-packed battle kickstarts between the good force and the evil powers!
Direction And Other Technical Aspects: 'Koi... Mil Gaya' and 'Krrish' minted a thunderous response from the masses and classes and now, the director Rakesh Roshan is back with a big bang with 'Krrish 3'. Talking in simple terms, this is a story of a stylized home grown superhero, in which he fights against the evil forces to save the world. Nevertheless, the unparalleled computer generated graphics and premium quality visual effects take the film to a new horizon. Seeing its trailers, one could easily guess the plot of the film, but its success lies in the way it is executed and presented. The makers have incepted a flick, which is enriched with desi VFX that oozes realism quotient. The film encompasses superior quality of VFX, which can prove as a very much tough contender for all sci-fi Hollywood flicks and the appreciable point is that all the VFX are designed in India. So, only VFX part took the entire show on its shoulders, although the story was quite predictable.
The direction is worth praise, as the director perfectly touches the chord by showcasing some romantic scenes between Krishna and Priya, some emotional moments between father and son that mirror their strong bonding and Krishna's mind flooded with anger, while combating with the ruthless Kaal. The introductory scene of Krrish, in which he saves an airplane with his superpowers from a fatal accident makes the viewers hold their breath. The gravity defying fight sequences between Krrish and Kaal's mutants are swift and thus, are gripping. The apparatus in Kaal's laboratory float in the air, thereby add a dash of an authentic sci-fi chronicle. Also, Kangana Ranaut transforming into different avatars without wasting a second, forms a visual delight. The first half of the film has a few dull moments, however our protagonist Hrithik Roshan hides them with his expertise and saves it from becoming dreary. The second half uncovers some shocking truths and hence, catches more interest. The loophole in the direction can be mentioned that the last fight between Krrish and Kaal seems as an enormous earthquake than the actual fight. The other thing that had a scope for improvement is that if the film would have trimmed a bit, then it would have retained the grip to much extent, keeping its crispness intact. The art direction, editing and background score were good and enhanced the beauty of the narrative.
Performance: The man behind the mask, Hrithik Roshan once again proved as the man of all seasons and the man of all reasons with his immaculate acting skills, as he takes up the challenges by the horns. After watching him as a superhero, one could feel that there could have no better choice than Hrithik for essaying the character. Hence, the actor became the cynosure of the eyes and again tagged himself as the blockbuster material. As the actor also portrayed father's role, he accentuated certain laughs with his unique voice tone as well as he looked conveniently aged with wrinkles on his face and perfect facial expressions. Being a superhero-centered flick, Priyanka Chopra had a narrow scope to shine, however the Chopra girl enacted her part with great aplomb.
Kangana Ranaut whipped up the real cream, as she got to showcase her dark side in this film. Kangana grabbed the meatier role and she provided full justice to it by delivering a whirlwind performance. The beauty looked apt in the shoes of a villain with perfect make-up and impeccable body language. Vivek Oberoi snatched eyeballs by exuding his mind-boggling villainous side. The actor sailed smoothly and delivered an applauding performance in every frame as well as threw certain comic punches that mingled well with his wicked attire.
The other starcast like Rajpal Yadav, Sachin Khedekar and Arif Zakaria lent a good support, but somewhere it felt like their talent got wasted a bit.
Music: Albeit, the movie was augmented with various rich elements, it lagged behind when it came to music part. The music composed by Rajesh Roshan seemed hammering and did not hobnob well at all with the tale. Still, the tracks like "Raghupati Raghav", "Dil Tu Hi Bata" and "God, Allah aur Bhagwan" were bearable with their visuals. In all, the music portion lacked the "oomph" factor, as it failed to create magic.
Final Verdict: Although the narrative can give deja vu feel, still the movie can be labeled as the Mecca of the best-quality CGI and VFX. The desi superhero jumps out of his comfort zone and takes your breath away by defeating rampaging villains. This superhero is here to stay and is expected to become a toast of 100 crore club. In a nutshell, a brilliant show that delivered a strong and inspiring message that 'There is a superhero in all of us'. Kudos!
