Kaalo Review

Horror films are considered to be very safe subject for film business worldwide because they neither need high budget nor big star cast. They don't even need lavish and beautiful locations. The ugly the location: the better the film's visual. People do not go to theaters to watch horror movies with their families, except in rare cases. Yet such films recover the amount invested in making such films because there is a special class who go to watch such films. Yet many producers and directors fail to produce and direct good horror movies which can't even attract that special class to the theaters.

KAALO is one of such Hindi films released on 17th December 2010. The director of this horror movie is Wilson Lewis who has recently directed HO SAKTA HAI and MALLIKA. It seems that making horror films are his passion. But the way he couldn't create any charm in his previous films, this film too is not going to scare you or keep you hooked till the end. The only difference from other horror movies (whether his own or of others) is that it is a horror film created in daytime. Other horror films are made mostly on night scenes with scary locations, cloudy nights, darkness, spiders in the locations etc. But this film is mostly shot in daytime so this point makes this film different but is this point enough for you to watch it?

Story: KAALO was a witch in the 18th century in a village named Kulbhata. It was believed that she had kept killing many young girls in order to gain power and become immortal. Finally the villagers killed her and buried her there and remained in peace for many years. But after some years they come to know that Kaalo had returned back to life and to their village. The villagers get scared and terrified and vacate that village overnight so that they could not be the victims of Kaalo's wrath.

Kaalo returns and is going to avenge her death. She is on the hunt of the villagers. The thrill is that a bus will pass from that way where Kaalo is waiting for revenge and that bus contains 11 passengers.
What will happen to those bus passengers? Will Kaalo get success in taking revenge from the villagers? What would be her end? How would the villagers get rid of Kaalo? Such answers make the rest of the film.
The director has attempted to create suspense till the interval by keeping secret of Kaalo. Who is responsible for the killings is kept secret. Finally Kaalo appears with huge bat wings.
Camera work by Pushpank Gawade is okay and sound department and back ground music by Rahul Ranade is also good.

This film lacks some chilling moments which is a must element in horror films.
The actors have done their part well. Swini Khera is good in her character and has justified her role. Aditya Shrivastav of CID fame too has performed well. Paintal is as usual.

This film may scare children but not you. But this film is not for children.

Director: Wilson Louis
Cast: Swini Khara, Aditya Srivastav, Paintal, and others

Verdict: Go for it only if you have extra time and money to spend.
