Rating: 2.5/5

One line Review: With hard hitting dialogues and power packed action scenes, this combat tale narrates the story of tough cop against the evil practices in the society.

Positive Points: The film manages to touch some sensitive subjects and, bring out in open the cruel realities of corrupt government servants and politicians. The movie is backed by the powerful performances of Priyanka Chopra and Prakash Jha. Perfectly written dialogues and punch lines make the sequences impactful.

Negative Points: The plot is predictable and lacks freshness. Yet the strong performances manage to keep the audience hooked. The story is a bit too stretched in the second half. The script is loose and has its share of loopholes.

Review Jai Gangaajal
Jai Gangaajal movie still

Plot: S.P. Abha Mathur (Priyanka Chopra) has been assigned the district of Bankepur to maintain law and order. The newly joined Abha Mathur soon gets the glimpse of the harsh reality that the police station and the area is totally in control of an evil politician Bablu Pandey (Manav Kaul) and his younger brother Dablu Pandey (Ninad Kamat). All the major Police Officers are the servants of Bablu Pandey. One of which is the influential B. N. Singh (Prakash Jha) who is a badly corrupted cop and serves the Pandey brothers on the cost of his duty.

Bankepur is a highly backward town cursed with corruption, molestation, land grabbing. The common man is frustrated with nowhere to go. Will Abha be able to bring back the lost hope and peace to the district and punish the culprits when the whole system is corrupted?

Direction and other Technical Aspects: Director Prakash Jha’s Jai Gangaajal is yet another film where a tough cop tries to stand against the evil system. The plot is highly predictable and offers nothing fresh. Though, Priyanka Chopra’s impactful performance along keeps the viewers hooked. Prakash Jha makes an exceptional debut in acting. In fact, the story line is written in a manner that Jha’s character seems equally important. It featured it like B.N. Singh’s support to Abha Mathur made things easier for her. His character even sidelined Priyanka’s character in certain sequences. The dialogues are hard hitting and strike the right chords. The casting is apt as all the supporting actors perform their role with conviction.

Performances: Needless to say, Priyanka Chopra delivers a power pact performance in the film. She is apt as S.P. Abha Mathur. Her character was supported strongly by Prakash Jha’s character – B.N. Singh. The prime focus was on these two characters throughout the film. At times, mostly in the second half, the spotlight was shifted to Prakash Jha’s character completely.

Manav Kaul essayed the role of Bablu Bandey, who is the main villain of the story. He perfectly fits the bill.

Supporting actors like Murli Sharma, Rahul Bhat, Ninad Kamat, Vega Tamotia performed their roles with conviction.

Music: The music and background score are aptly used. The back ground score strengthens the impact of some sequences.

Final Verdict: Although, the film has a predictable plot and lacks the expected punch, it can be a onetime watch for Priyanka Chopra and Prakash Jha’s exceptional performances.
