Gabbar Is Back Review

Rating: 3.5/5

One line Review: With loud dialogues and hard hitting scenes, this combat tale against corruption and all the evil things in the society is a complete mass entertainer.

Positive Points: The concept on which the film is based and the message that it gives out is what makes it a worth watch. Impressive performance by the Khiladi Kumar, the film is a complete mass entertainer with many applause worthy scenes. The film managed to change the villainous association with the word 'Gabbar'.

Negative Points: There are few scenes is the movie which seemed unreal and a few others are shot abruptly, one particular scene to be mentioned is the building crashing scene; it seemed so fake.

Plot: Akshay Kumar plays the role of Aditya an extremely virtuous professor of the National College. He is a common man but with an iron will to wash away corruption and other evils that prevail in the society. Aditya has a tragic past in which his beloved wife Kareena Kapoor who was pregnant dies in a building collapse. Furious with the incident, Aditya gathers all the proofs against the corrupt and evil builder Digvijay Patil (Suman Talwar) but it all goes in vain since he is just a commoner.

The canvas of the film further unfolds when Aditya after five years forms his team with his ex-college mates and present National College students. He forms the army of 'Gabbar' in order to teach Digvijay Patil and other corrupt bureaucrats a lesson. Gabbar and his team kidnaps and kills the most corrupt officers from every department leaving behind the file of their corrupt acts. Amidst all this, Aditya meets Shruti Haasan who essays the role of a lawyer. Meanwhile the laid back set of Police is shown in the scenario; they are unable to crack the mystery of Gabbar. Sadhu (Sunil Grover) is an honest constable but the most undervalued one by his seniors. The major purpose of this tale is to aware and make the youth and the citizens rise against corruption and other evils of the society.

Direction and other Technical Aspects: The look and feel of the movie is typically southern as it comes from the south director Krish. It is a south remake movie and hence one can see a lot of southern masala and classic action scenes. There are quite a few loop holes in the script and execution due to which one moves away from the plot in between. The song 'Teri Meri Kahani' stands out from the entire film due to the powerful backdrop and cinematography. The background score is average and so is the transition from frame to frame.

Performances: Needless to say, Akshay Kumar delivers a power pact performance in the film. He carries the entire film on his strong shoulders and he is the one man army against all the evils. Shruti Haasan does an average job in the movie. Her character was just like a comic relief midst the battle and delivers nothing much of substance.

Sunil Grover as Saadhu was phenomenal. He is indeed a great performer and once again has proved his worth with this film. Suman Talwar was too weak as a villain in the movie as we are so used to seeing extremely cruel, wicked baddies. And his funny tagline: 'Digvijay Patil Ek Brand Hai' which he uses for himself (several times) created a laugh riot. Other supporting characters also portrayed their part fairly well.

Music: The song 'Teri meri Kahani' already has topped music charts and watching it on the big screen was indeed a pleasure. Other song 'Cofee Peety Peety' featuring Shruti Haasan and her overly done dance moves was a passable one. The title track and the item song 'Aao Raja' by Chitrangada Singh precisely add their bit to the film.

Final Verdict: The film gives out an inspiring message and leaves you with positive and motivating vibes for a long time works well for me. For the sheer effort of creating a film that encourages youth and teaches righteous laws in a way that gels with today's generation earns all brownie points for the film. It is a mass entertaining film which is perfect for family audience.
