Dilwale Review

Rating: 3/5

One line Review: A complete Rohit Shetty style Bollywood entertainer loaded with striking performances.

Positive Points: The overall movie renders a feel good factor and leaves you smiling as you come out of the theatre. All the performances, be it SRK-Kajol, Varun-Kriti, and the supporting cast were praiseworthy and, made the movie worth watching. The music is good and the film is shot supremely well. The movie offers romance, action, comedy, and, is also sprinkled with drama.

Negative Points: The film is quite dragged to length by adding a few unnecessary sequences. It has a predictable storyline due to which the intensity is lost. Several parts of the plot are borrowed.

Plot: Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) is a car modifier, who lives in Goa with his younger brother Veer (Varun Dhawan). Veer is a happy-go-lucky guy who falls for Ishita (Kriti Sanon) and their love story begins. After dating for a while they both decide to tell their families about it. But, both Raj and Ishita's family reject to approve their relationship. The story of the film is not linear. It takes us to the flashback where Raj and his family stay in Bulgaria, belonging to a mafia family. Raj, who is referred as Kaali in the mafia world, falls for Meera (Kajol). After being friends, Kaali and Meera start dating but, due to unforeseen circumstances they part ways. They both never meet since then, but, destiny once again makes them confront each other. Meera now owns a restaurant in Goa and lives with her younger sister Ishita and hence, all the drama. Both, Veer and Ishita are unaware about their family past. There are also several side tracks in the film, one of which is of the King (Boman Irani), who is the don of Goa. Another is of Varun Sharma, who essays the role of Veer's best friend. Mani bhai who is a thief turned friend. Oscar bhai owns a store. All these characters 'try' to add fun elements in the movie. Will Kaali and Meera ever approve the love story of their Veer and Ishita? Will Kaali and Meera forget all the grudges and reunite? Watch the film to find out!

Direction and other Technical Aspects: Rohit Shetty has done what he is best at, making entertaining commercial cinema. Having the most loved SRK-Kajol pair in the lead surely works. The fresh pairing of Varun and Kriti is also in favour of the movie. The dialogues and the comic sequences are rib tickling. The storyline is weak and the plot is highly predictable. The story is not gripping and hence, cannot keep the audience involved throughout. Certain sequences and tracks seem unnecessary and drag the length of the film. The music and the cinematography are worth the praise. The action and the car sequences are shot flawlessly. The locations in the film are breathtaking gorgeous. Along with comedy and action, Shetty has added a lot of drama in this film. The chemistry and, the comfort, SRK and Kajol share are evident. Varun and Kriti, also are great in their part. Overall the movie renders a feel-good factor.

Performances: The film is a delight to watch because of the flawless and remarkable performances by not only the leads but also by all the supporting characters.

Shah Rukh Khan is the King of Romance and he proves it all over again. His chemistry with Kajol is beautiful. His performance in both the avatars is brilliant. He transcends from Raj to Kaali with ease and perfection. His expressions are flawless and no wonder he is still ruling the industry at 50.

Kajol is back on the big screen after the gap of five long years. She still manages to charm the viewers with her exceptional performing skills. She is beautiful and is a spontaneous actor. Gorgeously fitting in every frame, her new cooler avatar is a thumbsup.

With this film, Varun Dhawan is back in his comic avatar. After having done an intense and aggressive film like Badlapur, Varun slips back into a light-hearted and fun character Veer which is a treat.

Kriti Sanon looks gorgeous in every frame. There is not much for her to do in the movie, but she makes her presence felt.

Varun Sharma is at his comic best. Endowed and talented actors like Boman Irani, Johnny Lever, and Sanjay Mishra are not used appropriately. Their roles do not have much substance.

Music: The music of the film is already a hit and to celebrate the 'Dilwale' music album, Red Chillies Entertainment and Sony Music hosted a grand party. The song 'Gerua' featuring SRK and Kajol is a melodious one. It had over 5 million views within 24 hours of its release. 'Manma Emotion' featuring Kriti and Varun is a fun peppy number. 'janam janam' also is a beautiful song. Other songs also are composed mindfully.

Final Verdict: 'Dilwale' is a light hearted, entertaining flick, which succeeds in bringing a smile on the faces of Bollywood movie lovers. Rohit Shetty fans will enjoy the movie to the fullest. Also, it is a treat for SRK-Kajol fans. Do not expect much from the film; it is a typical masala movie with a cocktail of action, comedy, coupled with romance and drama.
