Are you going to watch the film DEPARTMENT? Wait! Read the review below before you go for it!
DEPARTMENT is a Hindi feature film which released on 18th May, 2012. This film was in news due to many factors such as due to Amitabh Bachchan in this film and due to Ram Gopal Varma's next film. Everyone was curious to know what kind of film Ram Gopal Varma delivers this time.
But your wait ends here. Ram Gopal Varma has delivered yet another worst film after delivering some bad films in a row. Why so? Read the review below.
Story : There is no story! It would be difficult for you to believe that this film has been made without any story but it's true. There is no story in the film and after watching the film you wonder what the story was! But how can anyone make any film without any story! This is a big question and we should ask this question to Ram Gopal Varma. How could he do such an impossible task? How could he make a film without story? If you ask Ram Gopal Varma he might say that who cares about the story! Aren't there characters! So many characters are there! Sanjay Dutt (Mahadeva) as a cop who goes on shooting gangsters and other villains from crime world or Rana Duggabati (Shivnarain) who too follows the same line and who keeps shooting villains from the beginning till the end. These cops keep shooting others as well as among themselves too so you don't get time to think about the story. Just what you need to do is to count how many bullets were fired or how many people were shot dead by them. Forget the reason of shooting! You are told that a person is a gangster and Ram Gopal Varma allows his filmy cops to go and shoot them. That's all!
Rana Duggabati doesn't even spare Sanjay Dutt. He even shoots him in the end so that you get shocked and you get the feeling of a good film with lots of twists and turns. Yes! There are many twists and turns which only Ram Gopal Varma can explain you why he did them because you don't understand anything or you wonder why all those things are happening.
Ram Gopal Varma doesn't forget to use abuses in his films after the success of SATYA. So in this film also his characters have openly abused other especially Vijay Raaz and Abhimanyu who keep using vulgar and abusive languages unnecessarily.
Gods knows why Amitabh Bachchan got ready to do such role or how did Ram Gopal Varma chose and convince him to do the role of Sir Ji Rao- A politician!
Acting : Amitabh Bachchan is a superb actor but he should watch his acting again in this film. Is it always necessary to do negative roles to prove ones acting skills? In fact you would neither like Amitabh Bachchan's character nor his gate-up. The way he wears and ties bell or ribbons on his wrist look very bad. Though they have tried to justify the reason of the bell which hangs from his wrist, it clearly makes you feel that it is forced and forcibly they are trying to justify the bell. It appears irritating! The string he ties around his wrist always looks new and fresh. How can they look fresh if he takes bath daily? They would surely get wet and the look would change!
Sanjay Dutt acts well. But his character is very confusing and undefined so you hardly get impressed. All his acting efforts go in vain due to his vague character.Rana Duggabati is tall but his performance is below average. ?? ????? ???? Amitabh Bachchan ???? ?? ???? (Just being tall doesn't give you the licensee to become Amitabh Bachchan)! Though he is very tall, his expressions are flat and acting weak. Even his dialogues delivery is not powerful. Only tall figure and robust body will not establish Rana Duggabati in Hindi film industry. He needs to sharpen his acting skills a lot!
Deepak Tijori keeps long mustache which you don't understand why! He looks joker rather than a helping cop. He too doesn't impress you with his acting as he used to do earlier.
In female department, Madhu Shalini impresses you with her acting skills. Though she has also exposed her skin to great extent and given bold scenes and has given many sexy and erotic gestures. If she uses her acting skills positively, she can make a place in film industry. However, she may remind you Nisha Kothari (Now Priyanka Kothari) because she resembles Nisha Kothari to some extent.
Abhimanyu Singh is okay in his role. Vijay Raaz too acts well.
Nathalia Kaur's doesn't impress you in her item song. She has exposed her legs to so extent that you hardly see anything except her bikni, still she doesn't leave any impact because her expressions are not good.
Script : The story is missing in this film. The writer has created all the characters which are vague and confusing. Most of the scenes are written without any meaning. Dialogues are vulgar and abusive. It is not clear what the writer wants to say.
Music : Music has been composed by Bappi Lahri which doesn't impress you eve a bit. The item song is below average. Even the song of Namak Halal 'Thodi Si Jo Pi Li Hai' doesn't impress you. The original was much better! However, background music is okay.
Choreography : A few steps of the song 'Thodi Si Jo Pi Li Hai' choreographed by Ganesh Acharya is very good.
Cinematography :Apart from story, camera work of this film is very bad. The DOP keeps the camera panning and moving so fast that your head starts spinning and you get headache. The cameraman Siddhartha More has shot the film in such a way that in 50% parts you get to see vague picture. It appears that most part of the film has been shot with mobile camera with less mega pixel. Even hany cam would have done better! (You might think) His zoom in and zoom out combination is very bad and he hasn't done justice with the characters. When Amitabh Bachchan is delivering some dialogues, he focuses his camera on the cup or other materials. In most of the scenes he has focused the camera on characters which are not delivering dialogues and kept the face of the dialogue delivering actor vague.
Action :Action of the film is okay but not extraordinary! You can enjoy only one action scene when Rana Duggabati goes to rescue his wife and the captivated child. Rest action scenes have no meaning!
Editing :Editing too is weak! Proper cutting and mixing has not been done. There is jump and jerk in the scenes.
Direction :Direction is bad! In fact very bad! The director keeps you confused till the end. The director thinks that he is shocking you by giving jerks and twists after every 15 minutes but it is not. Except the cops shooting one after another gangster, you don't understand what the director is doing! You wonder where the film is going! You wonder why you are watching the film! The director hasn't kept control over the lights and camera work. The director himself doesn't know why he has given so rubbish part and gate-up to Amitabh Bachchan. Just to look different you can not allow an actor like Amitabh Bachchan to wear anything! The director has given stress on exposing his female artists to lure the viewers through his adult content. The director has tried to play the magic of SATYA by using abusive languages which was not necessary.
Plus Points :Nothing
Minus Points :Photography, Camerawork, Direction, Music, Script and almost everything
Conclusion :God knows what compels Amitabh Bachchan do such bad films. These people merely say on TV interviews that they look for good scripts but finally they choose the worst without allowing the good scripts writer to reach them. It would be surely one of his worst films. So is the case with Ram Gopal Varma. This is another bad or say worst film made by Ramu. Even Amitabh Bachchan or other big star such as Sanjay Dutt can not save this film from disaster if the magic of adult content doesn't work. Yes! There are adult content such as exposure of Nathila Kaur and Madhu Shalini which may work and attract some audience otherwise there is nothing worth in this film which will attract viewers. Despite super stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt, and huge promotions, this film is hardly going to survive. This film would surely be listed as a big disaster if its budget is high.
Verdict :A bad film! Even if you can tolerate watching a bad film, don't go to watch it if your eyes are sensitive or if you are migraine patient. It would surely cause you a BIG headache! One of the worst films of Ram Gopal Varma which is not at all worth watching!
