Ex-navy officer Shammi (Arshad Warsi) and his three-times-US-Visa-rejected friend Kedar (Jackky Bhagnani) help the latter's father in his business of organising wedding events on boats. On one such tryst, the duo's boat is capsized mid-sea and they land on the beaches of Karachi. Is it possible for two Indians to get out of Karachi without their passports? Staying alive is a challenge in such grinding situations.

The Dumb And Dumber films have been a real treat for fans of comedy and it was but natural that an enterprising Bollywood filmmaker would attempt to try out the formula over here...and the result is Ashish R Mohan's Welcome 2 Karachi. However, what it ends up being is a poor cousin of the hit film series starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels.

While on one hand, Bollywood has been a witness to serious terrorism based films like BABY, on the other hand, there have also been films dealing with the subject but in a comical space. Films like FILMISTAAN, TERE BIN LADEN etc. are stark examples of the latter. This week's release WELCOME 2 KARACHI also has terrorism as its mainstay, but the film has been layered with comedy.

Barack Obama is identified as Morgan Freeman from Mandela. All songs must compulsorily have white chicks dancing in skimpy clothes. Pakistan is the land of terrorists, corrupt politicians and guns. Leader of the Taliban looks like a doppelganger of Zach Galifianakis (the annoying fat and hairy guy from The Hangover movies). Sheep with RDX filled stomachs can be detonated via old Nokia phones.

Thanks to Zindagi channel, Indian audiences at least have a brief idea of how Karachi, Pakistan's answer to the cosmopolitan Mumbai, looks like. Those viewers and others will be in for a dreadful surprise when they see the city depicted in this Hindi film. The city of the film's title is full of gun-toting criminals, gangsters and terrorists. You wouldn't find a dapper Fawad Khan-lookalike here for miles. Instead, there will be more bearded, nefarious men walking on the streets freely.

Hitesh is a Gujju bhai (Dalip Tahil) who is into wedding events. He has this huge boat which goes into the deep seas and comes back after the entertainment is over. His son Kedar (Jackky Bhagnani) is a person who is notably stupid or lacking in good judgment. In short, he is a moron. The captain of his boat is Shammi (Arshad Warsi) an ex-Navy man.

'Welcome to Karachi' is an attempt at a political satire with the backdrop of the 'explosive' (literally) situation in Pakistan. Shammi (Arshad Warsi) and Kedar Patel (Jackky Bhagnani) , the Indian version of dumb and dumber, decide to sneak into USA on a boat because Kedar wants to go and his visa gets rejected repeatedly. A freak accident lands them in the heart of Karachi, Pakistan instead.

Shammi (Arshad Warsi) and Kedar Patel (Jackky Bhagnani) are like Lloyd and Dunne of Dumb and Dumber. They are bestiez who have grown up together. Kedar is the son of Mitesh Patel (Dalip Tahil) who is an event manager for weddings in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Shammi on the other hand is an ex-navy officer who is kicked out of the force thanks to his stupidity. While Kedar is obsessed with going to the U.S., after being rejected a visa because of his surname.

Be warned: two dimwits on the run from assorted gun-toting pursuers in Pakistan isn't an edifying spectacle. The more they run the more trouble they get into and the more moronic the film becomes. Indeed, not a shred of Welcome 2 Karachi, erstwhile Rohit Shetty assistant Ashish R Mohan's second film, is remotely welcoming. A rough-hewn comic caper that is funny for all the wrong reasons, the film hinges on two done-to-death clichs: Pakistan is the most dangerous place on earth and a Patel will do anything it takes to get to the US of A.

'Welcome 2 Karachi', meant to be a remake of Hollywood hit 'Dumb and Dumber', is about two bumbling Indians who fetch up in Pakistan, and what happens subsequently. If you are not being too picky - I wasn't, warned by the presence of Jackky, he who spells it with two Ks, and the '2' instead of the 'two' in the title-you can have yourself a bunch of guffaws.
