For a film that talks about self reliance and the closure of the small-scale handicraft industries, Sui Dhaaga doesn't particularly discover the factors that led to the demise of the artisan tribe. It's a glaring flaw that isn't allowed to linger too much on your mind because director Sharat Katariya instantly immerses you into the lives of his affable characters.

Sui Dhaaga: Made In India is earnest, simplistic and not entirely convincing. Writer and director Sharat Katariya immerses us into a beautifully detailed world with flesh and blood characters but halfway through, he goes into Bollywood fairy tale mode. Some scenes made me teary and others made me tear my hair out in frustration.

It's tough to imagine that a stitching test - the race to sew a pillow cover to eventually win a sewing machine - could send your pulse racing but it does happen in Sui Dhaaga. It's because you care for and feel one with Mauji (Varun Dhawan) and Mamta (Anushka Sharma) and their race to self-reliance - turning Mauji's tailoring talent into an enterprise.

If you are a halfway decent soul, chances are you are a sucker for the underdog. Sharat Katariya's Sui Dhaaga (Needle and Thread) - Made in India is designed to touch that chord in us humans that makes sports fans sometimes cheer for a dark horse even when she is on a rival team or from another nation.

SUI DHAAGA - MADE IN INDIA is a heartwarming story of pride and self-reliance. Mauji (Varun Dhawan) stays in a village near Delhi with his wife Mamta (Anushka Sharma), father (Raghubir Yadav) and mother (Yamini Das). Varun works at a shop that sells sewing machines, owned by Bansal (Sidharth Bhardwaj) and his son Prashant (Ashish Verma). Both have a habit of ill-treating Mauji and make him do fun antics.

Anushka Sharma's contorted, crying face became the subject of wholehearted parody in a series of viral memes. But the same scene left me in tears on watching Sui Dhaaga: Made In India. In the movie, it is a moment of minor triumph for a husband and wife in the throes of desperation and despair.

It's all feel good in Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma starrer helmed by the DUM LAGA KE HAISHA fame Sharat Katariya. Another hinterland based fairy tale with humour & warmth driven from real day to day life laced with emotional trappings and seamless performance, SUI DHAAGA the story of Mauji (Varun Dhawan) and Mamta (Anushka Sharma) has the 'shamta' ( capacity) to entertain and enthrall.

Three years after Dum Laga Ke Haisha, the storyteller Sharat Katariya came out with yet another neighbourhood tale Sui Dhaaga starring Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma. Just like the previous venture, this film is also based around a similar premise of a lower-middle class family who struggles to keep their heads above the water. The treatment remains the same; truthful, tasteful and original.

If Sharat Katariya's previous movie was about the heavy lifting required to make a marriage work, his new film is about the warp and weft of a small-town man's life. Both Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015) and Sui Dhaaga: Made in India are set in dysfunctional middle-class families and explore the hopes and aspirations of Indians who live beyond the metropolises.

Sui Dhaaga - Made In India continues the franchise of 'fulfil your dreams' following the likes of Secret Superstar & PadMan. Mauji (Varun Dhawan) works at a sewing machine shop and is treated very badly by the owner. His wife Mamta goes against this and suggests Mauji to do something of his own. On his way to achieve the lost self-respect, Mauji decides to put up a sewing machine on a road and starts a new journey of his life.

Well-intentioned but somewhat facile in parts, Sui Dhaaga - Made in India stitches together an agreeable tale of a small-town wedded couple's attempt to set up a garment business in the face of daunting challenges. The film's lead pair, Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma, despite operating well outside their respective comfort zones, achieve optimum results.

Egged by his wife Mamta (Anushka Sharma), Mauji (Varun Dhawan) decides to ditch his demanding bosses for his own tailoring business. But amidst naysayers, unscrupulous relatives and lack of support, will his dream of turning into an entrepreneur become a reality?

Sui Dhaaga delivers exactly what it promises: a tale stitched together with 'sui-dhaaga', dipped in desi 'silaai' and 'kadhaai'. Small-town town couple wins big, pushing aside wily, wicked, unscrupulous townies and greedy rivals: the film's single-point agenda is drenched in both sweetness and earnestness.

Mamta (Anushka Sharma) and Mauji (Varun Dhawan) have been married for quite some time, but there is hardly any chemistry between them, leave aside biology. Most of the time, Mamta is either fetching water from outside the house or is making tea for her father-in-law, played by Raghuvir Yadav. On the other hand, Mauji is busy playing the lapdog to his employers, the Bansals, who own a shop in the heart of a big city.

What makes a tailor special? There are tailors who have a knack for hiding curves, those who achieve mastery over seamless sewing, those who establish a rollicking rapport with their customers, fast ones who can stitch a school's worth of uniforms in one night, and those who - as we saw in the recent hit, Stree - can measure ladies from a distance, merely by looking at them.
