Champak (Deshmukh), a Marathi manoos and his two sidekicks from Delhi- Genda (Vikram Thapa) and Gulab (Bhuvan Arora), storm into a bank with the intention of robbing it and end up taking the staff and customers hostage at gunpoint. However, it is soon evident that the three are rank amateurs, who have no idea about what they are doing. To make things complicated, the bank vault also stores proof of misdeeds by a corrupt politician (Upendra Limaye) and there is a trigger-happy former Para commando-turned-CBI officer Amjad Khan (Vivek Oberoi) in charge of the case.

BANK CHOR is a simple film about three amateur crooks who plan to rob a bank and the situations which arise after their robbery. The film starts off with a Vaastu Shastra believing sloppy thief Champak Chandrakant Chiplunkar (Riteish Deshmukh) along with his two inexperienced accomplices Ghenda (Bhuvan Arora) and Gulab (Vikram Thapa). Citing unavoidable 'personal reasons', Champak and his two friends land up to loot the 'Bank Of Indians'. Seeing the helplessness of the staff and the customers inside the bank after the robbery, Champak has a change of heart and decides to surrender to the police who surround the bank by then.

It's hard to place trust in a film directed by a man named Bumpy. Ironically enough, what he has to offer is nothing less than a bumpy ride. 'Bank Chor' is one of the most unbearable movies I have watched in recent times. And mind you, I sat through the Bill Gates scene in 'Half Girlfriend', which is saying a lot. The comic caper designed for quick laughs turns into a gyaan session, which is hard to sit through.

Champak (Riteish Deshmukh) with his two allies, Genda (Vikram Thapa) and Gulab (Bhuvan Arora), breaks into a bank in order to rob it. They are armed with guns, gadgets, masks and a foolproof plan. Or are they? The only problem is the fact that they themselves are bumbling idiots, facing the biggest roadblock of their life in no nonsense macho CBI officer Amjad Khan (Vivek Oberoi). Amjad is of the opinion that these Bank Chors are also involved in other bank robberies happening in the city and he thinks it is also connected to a murder! Knowingly-unknowingly Champak finds himself stuck amidst all the robberies, scam, murder and CBI officer Amjad Khan.

Bank Chor is the story of three novices who set out to rob a bank - believer-of-vaastu Champak (Riteish Deshmukh) and his two Dilliwale lackeys, Genda (Vikram Thapa) and Gulab (Bhuvan Arora). Even as they're fumbling their way with the robbery, the police reach the scene. Soon, the CBI arrives, too, with criminal-hating, tough-as-nails CBI officer Amjad Khan (Vivek Oberoi) determined to save the day and teach the bank chors a lesson. But who called the CBI for a simple bank robbery? Is there something bigger going on?

Bollywood needs to unlearn a few things. That is, before it begins to appreciate and learn a few others. For starters, will filmmakers quickly recognise that a film doesn't have to be two hours long? Because if you cut 20 minutes off this Ritesh Deshmukh-Vivek Oberoi film, Bank Chor - supposedly titled to make teeny boppers jump with joy with its rhyming with a cuss word - this could have been a somewhat funny comedy. But is this a comedy? I like movies that don't settle into a groove, especially if the groove is already well worn.

The title alludes to an expletive in the tradition of Delhi Belly's DK Bose. It's not mere wordplay, but also metaphorical of the deception Bank Chor has on its mind. Too bad this flat farce doesn't have the wits to pull it off. Directed by Bumpy for Y-Films, an offshoot of Yash Raj Films, this low-budget, low-rent comedy thriller starts out as a bumbling bank heist where everyone's a conscious idiot -- the victimiser, the victim. Except this brand of funny by the virtue of I-know-I-cracked-a-bad-joke doesn't quite tickle.

To make a zippy heist caper, which is what Bank Chor is aiming at, you don't need rocket science. You just need smarts. And that is the very thing missing from this shockingly lame, juvenile enterprise, whose title seems to have been chosen because it rhymes with a cuss word. Ha ha? Not. I couldn't even muster a tired smile for most of the run time, which brings to us to the doings of Champak (Riteish Deshmukh), and his fellow 'chors' Genda (Vikram Thapa ) and Gulab (Bhuvan Arora), who set out to rob a bank.

Riteish Deshmukh's Bank Chor was a much-delayed project with the initial one being touted as TV star Kapil Sharma's Bollywood debut. However, the production house - Y Films - had a fallout with Sharma and he was replaced by Riteish. Finally out in theatres, the film has been marketed as a comedy but is actually an aspiring comic-thriller. Aspiring, because it fails majorly in being a comedy, and gives us little thrilling experience. Bank Chor is director Bumpy's first film.

Considering the reputation Riteish Deshmukh and Vivek Oberoi have built for themselves in the comedy genre, it might be natural to assume that any collaboration between them would be filled with rhyming jokes, crass wisecracks about butts, breasts, farts and faeces, and other cliched devices used by creators of low-grade slapstick humour.

Three foolhardy dunderheads have a brainwave. They hold up a bank in the heart of Mumbai. As a gaggle of breathless television journos cackle away outside the building, a take-no-prisoners CBI officer arrives on the spot to tackle the situation. Halfway through, a short-fused Urdu-spouting gangster emerges from the crowd in the bank, matters snowball into a full-blown crisis, gunshots are heard, and there is blood on the floor. Amid the worsening commotion, a whole bunch of clueless hostages yo-yo helplessly between despair and dread.

The blueprint of Bank Chor must have had one instruction on it: Include jokes about people that Indian Twitter users love to cringe-watch. So there's an inexplicable cameo by Baba Sehgal, a really (really!) forced joke about Bappi Lahiri, a reference to Himesh Reshammiya and a throwaway line about a certain loudmouth news anchor.. Wonder why the writers left out Bobby Deol? Bobby might have been spared, but the movie opens with a baba who enters the bank with a lota and a gun. No questions asked. This is Champak (Deshmukh) who plans to loot the bank with his partners Gulab (Arora) and Genda (Thapa).
