Zwigato Movie Review Rating: 3/5

After Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2016) and Firangi (2017), comedian Kapil Sharma returns to the silver screen with Nandita Das’s Zwigato, which sees him in the role of a food delivery guy trying to make both ends meet. Lending him her complete support is actress Shahana Goswami as his wife. BollywoodMDB reviewer has seen the film and here is what he has to say about its highs and lows. Read the detailed review here before booking your tickets.

STORY: Manas Singh Mahto (Kapil Sharma) lives in Bhubaneswar with his wife Pratima (Shahana Goswami), two children, and an ailing bedridden mother. After losing his job as a floor manager at a factory, he joins a restaurant aggregator and food delivery company called Zwigato as a delivery man. Things take an unexpected turn when his wife Pratima decides to work at a mall as the cleaning staff. What happens next forms the crux of the story.

HIGHS & LOWS: With her latest directorial Zwigato, director Nandita Das tries to shine some light on the ever-struggling working class of India that Hindi cinema seems to have turned a complete blind eye to in recent years. She beautifully captures their daily struggles, without sounding preachy at any moment. Aside from wielding the megaphone, Das has co-written the film with Samir Patil and we must applaud the two for the honest, layered portrayal of the working class.

Apart from its writing, what keeps you invested in the film is the performance. Kapil Sharma, who is known for tickling audiences’ funny bones on the small screen, transforms himself completely to play an ordinary man trying to provide for his family. Shahana Goswami is terrific as his wife. Pratima understands the pain of her husband and is willing to step out of the house to bring in some extra income. Goswami showcases a wide range of emotions as Pratima. She is cheerful at one time and pensive at another time. There are a few exciting cameos as well.

LOWS: Yes, Zwigato is not preachy even though it deals with big issues like poverty and unemployment. But there is a bit of unnecessary political and religious drama thrown in to make a point.

FINAL VERDICT: Watch Zwigato for very convincing performances from Kapil Sharma and Shahana Goswami and deft direction from Nandita Das. The film will make you think about certain things and may even encourage you to treat your deliveryman more compassionately the next time he lands at your doorsteps with a parcel in hand. I am going with 3 stars.
