The musician then revealed the project's emotional motivation. Ed noted that many of his dear friends who died chose cremation, leaving him without a physical place to mourn and pay his respects. The chapel was built in response to his deep desire for a place to commemorate and honour his loved ones.

Sheeran's affinity to the church is much stronger because he stated a desire to be buried there when the time comes. He explains, “It's a hole that's dug in the ground with a bit of stone over it, so whenever the day comes and I pass away, I get to go in there. People think it's really weird and really morbid, but I've had friends die without wills, and no one knows what to do."
