RIP! Jane Birkin Dies At The Age Of 76

The British-French singer and actress Jane Birkin passed away on Sunday in Paris. Her work with the artist Serge Gainsbourg made her a key personality of the 1970s, and her personal style served as the model for an upscale handbag. She was 76 years old.

France's President Emmanuel Macron, who described her as ‘a French icon’ in a letter posted on Twitter, announced her passing.

The cause of Birkin's death was not immediately revealed, according to French news outlets, although she had been discovered dead at her residence.

Her international fame was a result of Birkin's personal and artistic ties to Gainsbourg, particularly after their 1969 hit song, “Je t’aime… moi non plus” (I Love You… Me Neither).

In the US, Birkin was best acknowledged for endorsing the renowned Hermes purses, which were status symbols with a distinctive strap clasp and signature latch.

Birkin and Gainsbourg struck up a 12-year love affair in 1968 movie set that captivated France. Their sexy duet, “Je t’aime… moi non plus” whose lyrics are interspersed with Birkin's breathy moans was regarded as symbolising the sexual revolution of the 1960s. The Vatican deemed it offensive.
