Pearls, starched collars, and black and white were worn to honour the designer during the event, which was famed for its celebrity-studded guest list and expensive attire. About 400 people attended the invitation-only fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. Lagerfeld's cat was also honoured. At least two celebrities appeared as Choupettes.

Attendees were invited to dress 'in honour of Karl' for the event's 'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty' theme. Lagerfeld oversaw some of the most well-known fashion houses in the world for many years, including Chanel and Fendi.

The designer, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 85, most frequently sported a ponytail and dark sunglasses. He frequently appeared in photos with Choupette, his well-known spoiled pet.

Along with Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, retired tennis player Roger Federer, Grammy-winning singer Dua Lipa, actress Penélope Cruz, and writer, actor, and producer Michaela Coel were invited to serve as this year's co-chairs.

The WNBA basketball player Brittney Griner, who was imprisoned in Russia, attended the event on Monday night with her spouse.

Karlie Kloss and Serena Williams, two celebrities, announced their pregnancies that evening.

The Great Hall of the Metropolitan Museum was adorned with 275,000 pink roses the previous year. The attire that celebrities wear when they enter the event, however, is nothing compared to the decorations.

A large portion of the public's attention is focused on the red carpet and the extravagant attire of those there, which featured Kim Kardashian donning a $4.8 million (£3.84 million) rhinestone-studded dress formerly worn by Marilyn Monroe last year.

Kardashian wore a Schiaparelli design this year that was covered in pearls and was created after she visited the Karl Lagerfeld Paris office last week, when she claimed to be gaining "a little inspiration for the Met."

On the red carpet, she told Vogue, "I just wanted to feel glamorous." "I wanted pearls - what is more Karl". Her sisters, Kendall and Kylie, also attended the event. This year's event has individual tickets starting at $50,000 and tables starting at $300,000.

Along with Rita Ora and her husband Taika Waititi, actresses Priyanka Chopra, Elle Fanning, Brooklyn, and Nicola Peltz-Beckham attended.

Rapper Lil Nas X appeared decked out in pearls and painted silver, looking like some sort of mystical creature.

Jonathan Majors, a troubled actor, was supposed to attend as a guest of Valentino but "mutually agreed" with the fashion house not to go after being accused of violence during an incident in March.

Choupette was another notable invitee who was not in attendance this year, although pop star Doja Cat and actor Jared Leto both dressed like the feline.

"Many people invited me to walk the red carpet of the Met Gala 2023 in tribute to Daddy, but we preferred to stay cosy and at home," said a post on the cat's official Instagram page. "We pay tribute to my Daddy every day since his parting and we are very moved to see one more day dedicated to him."
