On Tuesday, Johnny Depp testified in his recurring defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard in Virginia. While the actor denied Heard's abuse claims, claiming he never struck her, Depp's testimony also included some major revelations, such as his enrollment in using substances to "numb" himself from the demons of his past.

The 58-year-old actor also discussed his early relationship with Amber Heard, which he mentioned as "too good to be true" during his testimony. When asked how the actress was at the start of their love story, Depp said, “She was attentive. She was loving. She was smart. She was kind. She was funny. She was understanding.” He went on to say that within a year, she had changed into a completely different person.

The actor also explained the disturbing text messages that had become public in which he mentioned her "rotting corpse" in his testimony. The actor apologized for using such vulgar language, telling the court that he was "ashamed of some of the references made" and that it was an outcome of the heat of pain he was experiencing while in a dark place.

In addition, addressing the allegations of drug abuse, the Pirates of the Caribbean star stated that he did not use substances to "party," but rather to escape from things. "I've taken these substances on and off to numb myself — to numb myself of the ghosts, the wraiths that remained with me from my youth," he explained. Even though the actor stated that Heard's claim about his "quote-unquote substance abuse" is "grossly embellished," he said. The actor went on to say that he is not a "maniac" who must be high all of the time.

Johnny Depp's testimony will proceed on Wednesday, and the trial is predicted to last another month.
