Asghar Farhadi, an Iranian director who won an Oscar, salutes the protesters

Asghar Farhadi, a two-time Academy Award winner, stated that he is constantly monitoring the developments in his country while speaking on the sidelines of the Marrakech International Film Festival, which is now taking place in Morocco.

The death of Mahsa Amini, 22, in the middle of September, following her arrest by the nation's morality police for allegedly breaking the tight dress code for women, has ignited a wave of demonstrations throughout Iran.

The two-time Academy Award winner said he is "watching very attentively" the developments in his country while speaking on the sidelines of the Marrakech International Film Festival, which is now taking place in Morocco.

"I want to take this opportunity to salute my people, the new generation, the women and men who have taken to the streets and who are trying to take their destiny into their own hands," he stated.

Iran Human Rights, an organisation based in Oslo that monitors human rights violations, reports that security forces have murdered 342 people so far, including 43 minors, in response to the protests.

Five people have been executed by the Iranian government as a result of the demonstrations so far.

Farhadi claimed that following the current protest movement, Iran is confronting a "very decisive time" and "will no longer be the same country."

"The question is, how will these movements and protests end? And will the unity that is necessary among Iranians, for the country to move forward, be maintained?" he further stated.

The director, who is 50 years old, has received a number of the most important accolades in film, including the 2012 and 2017 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.

In late September, Farhadi urged people all over the world to "stand in solidarity" with the protesters. Farhadi had previously expressed his support for the demonstrations.

In a video message, Farhadi said, "They are looking for simple yet fundamental rights that the state has denied them for years."
