Prem Chopra is the legendary actor in the Bollywood. He is considered as one of the pioneers of the Hindi film industry. Prem Chopra is a very enigmatic and respectable personality. He has acted in more than 400 Hindi and Punjabi films. He is contributing to the Hindi movies since 50 years. Hence his contribution to the Bollywood is considered as enormous and the great actor has definitely has left his mark on the minds and hearts of the audiences.
The legendary actor who mostly was seen doing negative and comic roles during his younger days now seen doing mostly character roles. Prem Chopra was born on 23rd September 1935, in Lahore in a middle class family. His family was of the Hindi speaking Punjabi family. His father's name was Ranbirlal Chopra and his mother was Rooprani Chopra. Chopra had total 5 siblings. After India Pakistan partition, his whole family shifted to Shilma where he was brought up. His father's wish was to see Prem Chopra as a doctor. But destiny had other plans for him. Chopra completed his graduation from Punjab University. He is married to Uma who is a sister in law of showman Raj Kapoor. The couple has three daughters Prerana , Punita and Rakita. Out of which Prerana is married to famous actor Sharman Joshi.
After completing the education Chopra started working with the Times of India . He did lots of struggle to get a chance to work in Hindi films. He made a debut in the Bollywood through the film 'Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh ' in 1960. He first came into limelight through the film 'Upkar' in 1967. He left his job in Times of India to pursue a full fledged career in the Hindi film industry. In 1962, he got a national award for his Punjabi film called 'Chaudhury Karnail Singh'. He got a lot of appreciation for his role in this film. Prem Chopra rarely did positive, supporting and character roles during his career. People loved to see Prem Chopra playing the character of a bad man most of the times. The elderly and respectable actor consistently performed well after doing back to back negative roles in every film. His some memorable films are 'Upkar','Teesri Manzil','Do Anjane','Kati Patang','Bewafa se wafa' and many more. He has got many awards and nominations during his career. The soft spoken descent guy, has received the best supporting actor award for his film 'Do Anjane'. He has got the 'Legend of Indian Cinema' award for his contribution to the Hindi film industry in 2004. Prem Chopra also got numerous awards such as 'Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award, Ashirwad Award, Lions Club Award, Punjabi Kala Sangam Award and Ashoka Award. His pair with Rajesh Khanna was considered as a hit pair. The duo did almost 19 films together. Out of which 15 films were a box office hit.
However, the bad man on the screen is a very good soft spoken and a descent guy off screen. He is involved in many humanitarian causes and charity work. Recently the talented actor was seen doing character roles in the films like 'Chori Chori Chupke Chupke','Bunty Aur Babli','Viruddh',''Dhamaal','Koi.. Mil Gaya','Delhi 6','Golmaal 3','Rocket Singh - Salesman of the Year','Agent Vinod','Double Dhamaal' etc.. He will appear next in the films like 'Deewana Main Deewana' and 'I Love NY'.
