Bedabrata Pain Biography

Bedabrata Pain is a former NASA scientist who entered Bollywood as a producer, director and screenwriter. Bedabrata Pain is also known to invent CMOS image sensor.

Bedabrata's father is from Dhaka and his mother is from Faridpur. Born on 27 March 1963, he was schooled in St. Lawrence High School in Calcutta and South Point High School and then studied electronics and electrical Comm. Engg. (ECE) in IIT Kharagpur (1982-1986). He got an lvy league scholarship. He then, went to Columbia University, New York and received his M.S and Ph.D in Applied physics in 1992. He is married to Shonali Bose, who holds a Masters Degree in Political science from Columbia University.

In 1993, Bedabrata Pain joined NASA jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology and managed JPL's image sensor and focal-plane technology research and advanced development. He worked for NASA for 15 years as senior research scientist before quitting in 2008. He has to his credit 87 invention patents.

Bedabrata entered Movie Industry as a producer. He was the executive producer of the critically appreciated movie 'Amu' in 2005. He also was the main researcher for the documentary film 'Lifting the Veil' on the impact of globalization in India. He also wrote a book titled 'Behind the events in Kashmir'. He directed the critically acclaimed film 'Chittagong' starring Manoj Bajpai, Vega Tamotia, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Barry John and Dibyendu Bhattacharya. Bedabrata shot his 'Chittagong' using the same digital imaging technology that he with other NASA scientists had invented.
