On January 11, 2023, 2 major Tamil movies—"Varisu" and "Thunivu"—were released in theatres. The films have done well in theatres and are still playing there 25 days later. But it appears that Vijay's movie has become the biggest success. The box office total for Varisu increased by Rs. 3.25 crore during the weekend, bringing its overall domestic gross to almost Rs. 214 crores. This surpasses Vijay's previous record of Rs. 210 crores from Master, making it the highest-grossing movie for him in India. For a total worldwide revenue of Rs. 302 crores, the movie has made an additional Rs. 88 crores overseas.
This is the first Vijay starrer to reach the triple-century mark globally. To date, the movie has made around Rs. 143.75 crores in Tamil Nadu, which is once Vijay's highest performance in his career. This puts him ahead of both Master and Bigil, who have both made slightly more than Rs. 140 crores. After Ponniyin Selvan: 1 and Vikram, the movie will surpass Baahubali 2 and become the third-highest grosser in state history with an estimated additional Rs. 3–4 crores in box office revenue.
Vijay's box office prowess is seen in his ability to pull off such achievements despite receiving just moderate reviews and fierce competition. Vijay's upcoming film Leo is generating a good amount of anticipation, and it may be that movie that breaks free from the constraints of stardom and sets new standards.
