Ponniyin Selvan I mints 450 crores breaks Brahmastra’s box-office records; third highest-grossing Indian film this year

Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 by director Mani Ratnam has been playing in theatres all over the world with incredible success. The movie is still going strong even after spending 19 days in theatres. Trade reports state that despite the new Diwali releases, Sivakarthikeyan's Prince and Karthi's Sardar, many theatres are still prepared to show Ponniyin Selvan. The historical film is inching toward the Rs 475-mark globally and is probably going to reach it in a few days.

PS I beats Brahmastra and Vikram at the theatres

In order to become the third-highest-grossing Indian movie of the year, Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan: I outperformed two Brahmastra Part One hits, Shiva and Vikram. As a result of excellent global box office performance, the movie has so far surpassed both Brahmastra and Vikram's previous records by grossing more than 450 crore worldwide. Trade sources claim that as of October 17, the movie had a worldwide gross of 455 crore, with a whopping 161 crore ($20 million) coming alone from foreign markets. However, the enormous global box office successes of two south Asian blockbusters overshadow PS1's earnings. While the Kannada film KGF: Chapter 2 shattered all box office records with a take of 1207 crore, the thrilling historical action thriller RRR by SS Rajamouli made 1112 crore globally.

Ponniyin Selvan is still running strong 18 days after release, and market analysts expect it to keep edging closer to the 500-crore threshold. Right now, it's unclear if it will succeed in getting there. Based on Kalki's 1954 Tamil novel of the same name, Ponniyin Selvan: I is a historical epic. The movie chronicles the early life of Arulmozhi Varman, who would later go on to become the illustrious Chola monarch Raja Raj I. Along with others, the movie features Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan, and Aishwarya Lekshmi.
