Mani Ratnam's magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan:I starring Vikram, Ravi, Karthi, Trisha and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in lead roles has grossed over Rs 250 crore at the domestic ticket windows. On Day 21 of its release, the period film minted Rs 1.10 crore at the box office in India, taking the total domestic collection to Rs 253.85 crore.
As per early estimates, the film will continue to rake in decent collection despite being in the third week of release. However, PS-I may face challenge due to new South Indian films like Mohanlal, Sardar and Prince. The Diwali weekend will be very crucial for the film, as per trade analysts.
Talking of Ponniyin Selvan: I, the Tamil-language epic period action film is directed by Mani Ratnam, who co-wrote it with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan.
Produced by Mani Ratnam and Allirajah Subaskaran under Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions, the film is the first installment of two cinematic projects based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan.
The music is composed by A. R. Rahman, with cinematography by Ravi Varman. PS: I depicts the early life of Chola prince Arulmozhi Varman, who would become the renowned emperor Rajaraja I (947–1014).
