The Tamil horror comedy ‘Chandramukhi 2’ enjoyed a good weekend at the box office in Tamil Nadu but failed to make an impression overseas. The Raghava Lawrence and Kangana Ranaut-led movie grossed over Rs. 29 crores in India during its four-day extended weekend, with nearly Rs. 20 crores coming from Tamil Nadu. The Telugu-dubbed version performed poorly, with Telugu states contributing only Rs. 6 crore.
In Tamil Nadu, the weekend trend was also fine, with Sunday collections reaching first-day levels, but outside of the state, it simply did not maintain even after a modest start. There is a significant vacation today, which should allow for a good Monday figure, but where the final total in Tamil Nadu can reach will depend on how it holds tomorrow. Given the modest pre-release expectations, a final gross of Rs. 35 crore in the state will be an acceptable outcome.

The original Chandramukhi, which was released in 2005, was a tremendous success at the time, generating over Rs. 70 crores in India and doing well outside of Tamil Nadu. The sequel will be unable to surpass the original's inflation-adjusted all-India gross, let alone the inflation-adjusted figure, which is likely to be around Rs. 400 crores today.
