'12th Fail' narrates a tale of ambition, perseverance, and triumph over adversity, based on Anurag Pathak's bestselling novel depicting the remarkable journey of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma and IRS officer Shraddha Joshi. Medha Shankar plays the lead opposite Vikrant in the film.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the director, expressed that while the movie is inspired by Manoj Kumar Sharma's life, it mirrors the struggles and dreams of each individual who migrates to big cities with aspirations. He emphasized the extensive effort involved in creating the film, mentioning that it took him five years to write the script, as every character's story demanded attention. He stressed that '12th Fail' is not a biopic but a reflection of universal experiences, containing elements of his own and the audience's journey.
Making the film wasn't financial gain but rather the desire to create a positive impact in people's lives. He highlighted his deliberate choice of this project over potential money-spinners like the continuation of the 'Munnabhai' franchise, emphasizing the importance of creating meaningful art that inspires and influences.
