Filmmaker Karan Johar, who is currently helming the Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt-starrer Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, recently spoke about the much-hyped North-South cinema debate and the possible outcomes if the Kannada-language blockbuster KGF was made in Bollywood.
Admitting that makers in the Hindi film industry do not enjoy enough “freedom” like their southern counterparts, Karan said, "When I read the reviews of KGF, I’m like if we made this, we would be lynched. But here, everybody is like ‘Oh it was a celebration, a party’ and it was... I loved it. I loved it with all my heart. But I feel hum yeh banaate to? (What if we had made this?)”
Acknowledging that it works both ways and filmmakers in the Hindi film industry do not have enough freedom, Karan adds, "So, we are all over the place. We are living a dual existence and we have to stop".
On the work front, Karan Johar is returning to direction with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. The movie features Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi and is slated to release on 10 February 2023.
Besides, Karan's upcoming production Jugjugg Jeeyo is also up for release. Starring Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani, Anil Kapoor, and Neetu Singh, the rom-com will hit cinemas on 24 June 2022.
