Varun Dhawan is currently on a promotional spree for his upcoming film JugJugg Jeeyo. The actor sat down for an interview with his co-stars Anil Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, and Kiara Advani. The Badlapur (2015) actor was discussing the interesting topics that are being explored in today's films and during one of the debates, he commended actor Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor, son of Anil Kapoor, for pioneering parallel cinema in recent years.

In India, parallel cinema is known as New Indian Cinema. The movement is commonly believed to have begun in India in the early 1950s. The initial Indian Parallel Cinema wave lasted four decades until the early 1990s, according to film enthusiasts.

It all started when Varun insisted on questioning Anil about Harsh Varrdhan’s works like Mirzya (2016), Ray (2021) and Thar (2022), claiming that "the parallel cinema movement was actually started by Harsh."

Cinephiles, on the other hand, found Dhawan’s claim difficult to swallow and slammed him for making it. One Reddit user wrote, “I haven’t cringed this hard in a long time!” “For Varun to say such a thing with a straight face should tell us what state Bollywood is in today,” stated another.

Meanwhile, Jugjugg Jeeyo is slated to hit the theatres on 24th June, 2022.
