Sonu Sood mourns the loss of Indian rifle shooter Konica Layak

Bollywood star Sonu Sood on Thursday took to Twitter to mourn the sudden demise of young national-level shooter, Konica Layak. The actor, who turned messiah for thousands of people during the coronavirus pandemic, had gifted her a German-manufactured rifle after he came to know about her struggles.

“Aaj sirf mera nahi, sirf Dhanbad ka nahi, poore desh ka dil toota hai,” Sood wrote on his Twitter handle. The actor also shared a news article about the shooter’s passing away and wrote, “Iss dukhad khabar se dil puri tarah toot gaya. Mujhe yaad hai jab Konica ko rifle gift ki thi, usne mujhe Olympics ka medal lane ka vada kiya tha. Aj vo sab khatam hogaya. Eshwar uske parivar ko shakti de.”

Konica Layak, who hailed from Anugarh Nagar in Dhanbad, committed suicide at her hostel in Bally in West Bengal’s Howrah district on Wednesday night. She was found hanging in her room with a dupatta tied around her neck, lifeless.

Sonu Sood had gifted her the rifle so that she could participate in the Nationals and other shooting competitions. In January, Layak had tweeted “11th Jharkhand State Rifle Shooting Championship-2020 me one gold and one silver jeeta hai maine, magar Jharkhand government se koi help nahi mila hai abhi tak. Please help for one rifle,” and also tagged Sood in her post.

Replying to her, the actor had said, "Main aapko rifle dunga. Aap desh ko medal de dena. Aapki rifle aaptak pahuch jayegi."

Layak was supposed to get married in February this year. She was 28.
