Bombay High Court judge Gautam Patel has issued a stern warning against the "dangerous message" conveyed by films like 'Singham,' which depict police officers as dispensers of instant justice, circumventing proper legal procedures. Speaking at an event organized by the Indian Police Foundation, Gautam Patel expressed his concern that these movies promote impatience with the rule of law and perpetuate a negative image of the police, portraying them as bullies, corrupt, and unaccountable.

Furthermore, he criticized the way judges are portrayed in such films, describing them as docile, timid, bespectacled, and poorly dressed. He argued that this portrayal reinforces the populist belief that the courts are ineffective, prompting the police to take matters into their own hands. He specifically pointed out a climax scene in the 'Singham' movie where the entire police force descends upon a politician, implying that justice is served instantly. Gautam Patel challenged this notion, asking if true justice had indeed been achieved and emphasizing the danger of such messages.

While commending Prakash Singh, the former Director General of Police in Uttar Pradesh, for advocating police reforms, he stressed the necessity of a more comprehensive discussion on reforming various aspects of the justice system. He also highlighted the regrettable populist perception of the police as bullies, corrupt, and unaccountable, which can lead to public celebration of extrajudicial actions, such as encounters resulting in the death of suspects. He questioned whether true justice is delivered in such instances, despite the public perception.
