Sanjay Leela Bhansali wants Ajay Devgn to play Tansen in Baiju Bawra

Celebrated filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is presently awaiting the release of his new directorial venture Gangubai Kathiawadi. The period drama stars Alia Bhatt in the titular role with superstar Ajay Devgn making in a cameo appearance.

Right after the release of Gangubai Kathiawadi, Bhansali is expected to commence work on his next directorial Baiju Bawra, which he had announced in 2019. While the filmmaker has already signed his favourite Ranveer Singh to play the title role, he is yet to cast anyone in the other major male lead character in the film—that of the legendary musician Tansen.

The latest we hear is that Bhansali is very keen to rope in Ajay Devgn for the role of Tansen. However, it will take time before the superstar agrees to come onboard as the filmmaker is still working on the script. “Sanjay Leela Bhansali first needs to flesh out the role in accordance with Ajay Devgn’s star power,” a source in the know informs a publication.

As per the female lead is concerned, Bhansali feels that Alia Bhatt fits the bill. However, Deepika Padukone is also keen to do the film and star apposite Ranveer Singh. It remains to be seen if the filmmaker will choose Bhatt or Padukone for Baiju Bawra.

Meanwhile, Bhansali is also set to make his digital debut with a high-profile show called Heeramandi. It is set at Netflix.
