Veteran Tamil actress Rekha Harris remembers the incident from a notable scene she filmed for the 1986 movie Punnagai Mannan. This scene is from the movie, which shows two in love people who decide to commit themselves by jumping from a waterfall together because society is keeping them apart. The couple appears to kiss while crying as they fall from the waterfall.
Rekha Harris was 16 years old and Kamal Hassan was 32 at the time this movie was being made. Most viewers who have seen and wept along with it may initially find this scenario to be terrible yet beautiful, however Rekha shared the disturbing backdrop of this scene in an interview.
Rekha Harris said in an interview with Cinema Vikatan that a kiss was added to a sequence without her knowledge or consent in the 1986 Tamil film directed by Balachander. The actor claimed that this is what actually happened, adding that the kiss between Kamal Haasan's character and the other character occurred just before they were about to commit suicide. But the other guy was unaware of this brand-new development in the circumstance. “She told the director about the kiss,” the veteran actress recalled, “and he dismissed it, saying, ‘It was normal, and it didn’t have any vulgarity.'” There isn't any obscenity in the play, K Balachander allegedly said Rekha, therefore we must demonstrate the characters' closeness and love for one another.
The well-known actress continued by expressing her concern that, following the filming with Haasan, her father might object to the scenario. Harris stated that the incident 'haunted' her for days on end but that she could do nothing to stop it.
When the interviews from 2020 were published, it quickly gained popularity on social media. Rekha Harris speaks easily and with a clear feeling of "I've-made-peace-with-it" attitude when recalling the incident. However, a lot of people thought it was just another case of professional sexual harassment where a woman's consent was not taken into consideration. Many people even remarked on how Rekha and the interviewer were upbeat when talking about the incident, showing how much more we still need to understand about workplace s*xual harassment.
