Rani Mukerji made her Bollywood debut in 1997 with Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, but it was Karan Johar's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai that made her a rising star with the masses. Rani was known in her early days as the actor with a distinctive voice, which remains one of her most distinguishing features to this day. However, not everybody in the film industry, including her Ghulam co-star Aamir Khan, accepted her voice at the time.

Ghulam came out several months before KKHH and established Rani as the 'Aati kya Khandala' girl. However, few people are aware that Rani's voice was dubbed in the film by a voice-over artist. Rani revealed in an interview in 2018 that Aamir Khan, Mukesh Bhatt, and Mahesh Bhatt were all against Rani redubbed for herself in the film. She told them, “felt that probably I didn’t have the shrill, nice and beautiful voice that heroines used to in those days.”

Aamir had a conversation with her at one point and told her that even Sridevi's tone was dubbed over in so many of her films, so it was perfectly fine for someone to dub for her. She recalls when he said, “ We should do anything for the betterment of the film.” Rani thought that it did make sense, she further added that “ Being a newcomer I didn’t have a choice, but it was gracious of them to inform me.”

Ghulam and KKHH were shot at the same time and when Karan Johar saw the Ghulam film he asked Rani if she had a problem with dubbing her voice and that when she told him “ I told him that they thought my voice was not good. He asked me whether I had dubbed for my first film. He asked me if I had any issues with dubbing at all. He told me to dub for KKHH. Karan took that decision and that sort of changed everything for me. KKHH was such a popular film. Everyone saw it. There was acceptance for my voice.”

Later when Aamir Khan saw KKHH she said that it was really a big thing as he called her and apologized for their mistake. She added, “I remember Aamir calling me after watching KKHH, saying, ‘Babes I think we made a huge mistake by dubbing your voice. And your voice is really good.’ For me, that was a really amazing moment, since I respect him so much. The fact that he called and said that they had made a mistake was a big thing for me as a newcomer.”
