Ponniyin Selvan 2 Box Office Collection: Mani Ratnam’s Movie Moves Towards Rs 350 Crore Mark; Highest Grossing Tamil Film Of 2023

The critically acclaimed film ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ by Mani Ratnam has received a tonne of support from the public and is currently dominating the box office. In India alone, the film has raked in more than Rs 160 crore and has already earned ₹300 crore worldwide.

‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ reportedly broke all records for Tamil films in 2023, according to Lyca Productions. The international gross for the film is getting close to Rs 350 crore. On day 15, the film barely made about Rs 1.50 crore in India, according to the reports. A rough estimate of Rs 164.43 crore has been received at the box office as of this point.

Mani Ratnam previously acknowledged that ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ was his dream project and congratulated the cast and crew for their dedication during the promotion of the film.

"PS (Ponniyin Selvan) has been a dream for a very long time, since the time I first read the book during my school days. I neither thought I'd ever get into films nor did I think I'd make it. But it's always been my calling to be made. It's so spectacular as a story and as an adventure.

Several people had tried to do this before. They couldn't for various reasons. Maybe they wanted to leave it for me! I am so happy and so glad that I got a chance to make it, and that too at this point in time when the technology has improved tremendously," he said.

South India saw greater success than North India with ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’. At a gathering, Karthi discussed the reasons ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ struggled in North India compared to ‘KGF’, ‘Kantara’, and ‘RRR’.

"I think they (the audience in the North) found it a bit difficult to understand. That's what I felt initially. When you are reading a novel, you will forget the names by the time you get to the tenth page. Similarly, here too they had that problem. However, when the film was released on OTT, they were able to get it. So, they will be able to better understand the film when the second part comes. However, the film was praised for its aesthetics," he said

Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Trisha Krishnan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman, and R. Parthiban are some of the actors who appear in the film. It is an adaption of the same-named 1955 novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy.
