Director Ayan Mukerji had a strong inclination towards casting Imran Khan instead. He had a personal connection with Imran through his relationship with Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, and he was impressed by Imran's performance in 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.'
However, after screening 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na,' Ayan had a gut feeling that Imran was not the right fit for the role of Sid in Wake Up Sid. He couldn't explain it, but he just knew that Imran wasn't right for the part.
Ayan conveyed his feelings to Karan Johar, the film's producer, who was initially hesitant. Karan had already offered the role to Imran, and he liked Imran very much. But in the end, he trusted Ayan's instinct.
Ranbir Kapoor was then cast in the role of Sid, and he went on to give a stellar performance. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it launched Ranbir's career as a leading actor.
