Veteran actress and politician Jaya Prada has been handed a six-month jail sentence by a Chennai court due to an old case. Additionally, she has been fined Rs 5,000 for her alleged failure to pay Employee State Insurance (ESI) contributions to the workers of her theater.

Jaya Prada, along with her brother Raj Babu, were co-owners of Jayaprada Cine Theatre. The second metropolitan magistrate court in Egmore found them both guilty of not meeting their legal obligation to pay contributions to the ESI corporation.
The ESI corporation lodged a complaint against Jaya Prada and her brother for not paying Rs 8,17,794 in contributions from November 1991 to September 2002. The court's ruling mandates that the accused settle the outstanding amount with the complainant.
The ESI corporation stated that the accused violated Section 85(a) of The Employees State Insurance Act, constituting an offense of non-payment of contributions. This violation falls under the purview of Section 85 (i) (b) of the Act, making it punishable.

Jaya Prada, renowned for her prominence in the Hindi and Telugu film industries, transitioned into politics after leaving the film world in 1994. She aligned herself with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), later serving as a Rajya Sabha MP and subsequently a Lok Sabha MP. Her political journey led her to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2019.
