According to reports, Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah’s forthcoming film Jalsa will premiere directly on OTT, forgoing a theatrical release. Directed by Suresh Triveni and produced by Vikram Malhotra, the film is reportedly headed to Amazon Prime Video.
If the news turns out to be true, Jalsa will mark Balan’s third film in a row to have a direct-to-digital release, with Shakuntala Devi (2020) and Sherni (2021) being the previous two.
Sharing more details, a source in the know informs a publication, “Vidya Balan is not skeptical about the OTT release anymore. The success of her previous two movies, Shakuntala Devi and Sherni, which also premiered straight on Amazon Prime Video, has proven that a solid content film works and wins hearts irrespective of whether it is released in theatres or on a web platform.”
The source goes on to add, “Moreover, Jalsa’s promising and high-quality theme is not something theater audiences usually vie for, and hence the makers decided to give it a worldwide release on OTT.”
In addition to Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah, Jalsa also stars Iqbal Khan, Rohini Hattangadi, Vidhatri Bandi, Gurpal Singh, and Surya Kasibhatla. Talented actor Manav Kaul will be seen in a special appearance.
An official announcement is highly awaited.
