Recently, a young woman was abducted, gangraped by her neighbours, and then paraded on the streets in Shahdara in Delhi. The heinous crime shook everyone. It reminded many of the horrific Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case of 2012.
Actress Huma Qureshi, who is currently busy promoting her upcoming streaming show Mithya, condemned the incident and said that “any society, any country should be ashamed if they can’t provide basic safety and security towards women”.
“Regardless of which country we are in, it is a matter of shame that we do not give our women, our young girls an environment of safety, especially in a country like India where we worship the female form in the form of Kali, Durga, Maa Saraswati, and Lakshmi. I think it is quite shameful that in our country, with all our traditions, we are often exposed to incidents which break our heart and shatter our mind, when brutality is unleashed upon women,” she said.
The actress further added, “I feel very strongly about it. I feel this is something we must not tolerate or allow in society. We have to take steps, whatever they need to be, in our education system, in our homes, in our colleges or in the public sphere, so that we may stop this. This cannot be allowed; it cannot be tolerated. And any society, any country should be ashamed, if they cannot provide basic safety and security towards women.”
