The narrative of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's casting conundrum for the part of Alauddin Khilji in the movie that was originally titled 'Padmavati' has come to light; Bhansali approached Shah Rukh Khan after Ranveer Singh took his time to answer to the offer.

However, Deepika Padukone insisted on keeping the title 'Padmavati' even though SRK had doubts and recommended a modification, which finally put the filmmaker in a difficult situation. The casting issue was resolved when Ranveer Singh returned to the film, just as things appeared to be getting tense for Bhansali.

Shah Rukh Khan claimed that he receives screenplays based on real-life characters but has been cautious in picking such roles, aware of his important position, in an old interview. SRK acknowledged his talent for making unpleasant people attractive, but he stressed the value of not elevating particular characters in the media.
