Govinda is known for his ability to make people laugh and for working well with director David Dhawan. In an interview, he talked about why he turned down parts in Shah Rukh Khan's ‘Devdas’ and Aishwarya Rai's ‘Taal’. Even though he is the undisputed king of comedy, the actor admits that turning down these projects may have been the biggest mistakes of his career.

Both ‘Devdas’ and ‘Taal’ had Aishwarya Rai as the main star, and Govinda turned down offers to be in both films. In the past, it was said that he didn't like the name ‘Taal’ and wanted to change it. In an interview, Govinda explained why he didn't like the name. He said that being a star was the main reason he turned down these famous projects. He was offered the part of Chunnilal in ‘Devdas’, but Jackie Shroff got the part in the end. In the same way, he was given the role that Anil Kapoor played in ‘Taal’.

Govinda told Film Companion in an interview, "When I said no to Devdas, I also said no to Taal at the same time." Both characters went on to become famous, but I was at the top of my game and wasn't sure if people would accept me in a character part or not.

He said, “I thought to myself that I’d keep reminding myself that I was playing CHunnilal in the movie. And I would ask multiple questions that could upset the makers. I like to get into the skin of the characters and understand the situations around them, they make my characters memorable. If nothing else, the audience at least would know I’ve played my part honestly. I would not want anyone to suspect my honesty towards my work”.

Govinda was worried about taking on character parts, but he stressed how much he cared about his work. Govinda's performances stood out because he worked hard to understand his personalities and put himself in their situations. He wanted people to see how honest and true he was in his work.

Govinda hasn't been in as many big-budget projects in recent years. In 2014, he was in the films ‘Kill Dil’ and ‘Happy Ending’ as a supporting actor alongside Ranveer Singh and Saif Ali Khan. He was nominated for a Filmfare supporting actor award for both of these roles.
