Despite being a divisive movie, ‘Gadar Ek Prem Katha’, starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel, was a huge hit. The actor is making a comeback as Tara Singh in the follow-up ‘Gadar: The Katha Continues’ after 22 years. Here's a flashback to when Sunny Deol attacked Shabana Azmi for calling the movie provocative and expecting the actress to be intelligent, ahead of the release of ‘Gadar 2’. In ‘Gadar’, a Sikh guy marries a Pakistani Muslim woman. The Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 serves as the setting for the narrative.

The Hindi-Muslim issues in the movie are centered on the love narrative between Pakistani and Indian characters. ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha's’ plot caused quite a controversy. A portion of society didn't enjoy the 2001 Anil Sharma film. Muslims appeared to be villains in the film, while Hindus were victims. It was also labeled as a nationalistic movie with a Hindu nationalist message. Shabana Azmi was one of many people who claimed the movie was anti-Muslim.

Liberal Shabana Azmi stated that ‘Gadar’ is a challenging movie in an interview with The Times Of India in 2001. She claims ‘Gadar’ depicts Muslims as the other and disagrees with the aesthetic and sensibility of the film. She also questioned the wisdom of producing the movie at a time when initiatives were being made to improve relations between the neighboring nations. She says in her analysis of the screenplay that the girl's father is not a bad guy since “he subliminally reinforces the canard that any Muslim is automatically a Pakistani.” She claims that the film portrays every Muslim as being from Pakistan.

Azmi went on to say that the movie confuses the problems of nationalism, religion, and identities and doesn't address the complexity of the suffering caused by the Partition. Shabana did, however, indicate that she thought there should be some discussion about partition. The actress clarified that she opposed propaganda and didn't support calls for a ban on the film.

Shabana Azmi's remarks infuriated Sunny Deol, who criticized her. He asserted that she needed to be well-read and educated rather than making divisive remarks about the movie. He claimed that individuals only spoke out against the film to make the press. With ‘Gadar's achievement, he dispels any doubts, arguing that it shows there was nothing wrong. He continued by saying that although the film is set during the partition, it is not meant to offend anyone or cause a commotion. The actor then defended his film, claiming that those who perceive it as being anti-national have deranged brains. Then he admitted that his grandparents had seen the partition and that he wouldn't act in such a way as to bring about another Holocaust.
