Sunny Deol's luck with 'Gadar: Ek Prem Katha' was legendary. He starred in the blockbuster movie Tara Singh, a young Sikh guy who marries Muslim girl Saqeena while there is an India-Pakistan conflict and later falls in love with her. The Anil Sharma movie had the correct intentions, which is why it was a box office success.

Despite competing with Aamir Khan's Lagaan, ‘Gadar’ was an astronomically successful movie. After the movie's popularity, wild speculations regarding the actor's salary for each picture began to circulate. According to reports, Sunny increased his rate and was now billing 5 crore every movie.

Sunny Deol was questioned about his pay and whether he had genuinely started charging Rs 5 crores per film in an interview with Filmfare in 2001. The actor expressed amazement at the amount by saying, “Who on earth said it’s Rs 5 crores? I thought I was asking for 15 crores! Ha, ha, ha. Jokes aside, now I wish producers would shell out Rs 5 crores. The rumor's absurd. Being a producer myself, I know how the economics work. I ask for what I deserve. Hits and flops have never been the criteria for my price.”

In the same interview, Sunny Deol also claimed that people enjoy watching him perform Dhishum Dhishum antics. He defended his macho persona and conceded that ‘Gadar,’ despite being a love story, worked because it had a lot of action and great drama. According to a report, he demanded Rs 4.5 crores for ‘Gadar,’ making him the highest paid actor at the time.

We are unable to confirm this number because it was based solely on rumours and the actors' asking prices were never made public. Speaking about the film's success, the ‘Darr’ actor acknowledged that despite being around for 18 years, he had yet to score a huge hit.

In the same interview, the actor said, “Gadar isn’t the first hit of my career. I’ve had hits earlier though they weren’t such huge blockbusters. Hits and flops have been a part of my career graph. Of course, there’s something very special about such a big hit after being in the business for 18 years. That proves I’m still growing in this field. Can any of my colleagues boast of such an achievement?”

Since both films clashed, he even praised Aamir Khan's 'Lagaan' for doing well and remarked, “For years, trade pundits have been predicting that it’s the age of the bubble gum heroes. If that’s true, then how come Aamir Khan and I’ve given such big hits at this stage of our careers?”
