After taking the box office by storm, Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif’s Sooryavanshi (2021) has now landed on streaming media giant Netflix. The cop-drama was originally scheduled for its theatrical release on 24th March, 2020. However, director Rohit Shetty and the producers had to cancel its release due to the coronavirus pandemic. It entered theatres on November 5, 2021, coinciding with Diwali, and opened to thunderous response at the ticket window.
Following the theatrical release on November 5 worldwide, Sooryavanshi has now started streaming on Netflix. In addition to Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, the film also features special appearances by Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh.
Produced by Reliance Entertainment, Dharma Productions, and Rohit Shetty Picturez, Sooryavanshi arrived on Netflix on December 3rd at midnight. Reportedly, the streaming media giant has paid a whopping price to the makers to buy the digital rights.
"Sooryavanshi will premiere on Netflix a month after its theatrical release, stepping aside from the conventional eight-week window. And for breaking the norm in these uncertain times, Netflix has paid a premium price to Rohit Shetty and Reliance Entertainment. While the earlier deal was cracked at approximately ₹75 crores, the team of Sooryavanshi has fetched ₹100 crores from Netflix," a trade source had earlier informed a publication.
Sooryavanshi will be remembered as the first Bollywood film to enter theatres after Maharashtra allowed reopening of cinemas in the state in October 2021. The film is inching closer to the coveted ₹200 crore mark at the domestic box-office.
